Hi everyone I need some advice. I'm looking to buy a 00 new edge and my budget is 7500.00. I found one I really like went to see it checked it out and noticed when looking things over it wasn't registering oil on the dipstick, 2qts later and it was good. Besides that everything seemed good just normal older car stuff. When we went on the test drive and got on the highway whenever i downshifted then floored it I noticed blue smoke out back... Now both me and the owner were upset over this he obviously wanted to sell it and I drove quite a ways to buy it. He never notice this because it's been in the garage since November and since it doesn't do this when driving normal or even when you drive it a little fast. My question is I might have a chance to get this car for 2k, could I get a motor and have it installed and still make my budget work?

Was the oil under the car on the ground? If not, where did the oil go? Leads me to believe he drove it low on oil, hence the smoking. If the car was 2 qts low to start off that means the feller probably didn't give too much effort to preventive maintenance either. Guy didn't even top the oil off before you came to look. Probably end up with more problems throughout the vehicle. You got 7500 bucks man. There are plenty of nice cars out there. Pass and find you something else.

Unfortunately Iv been looking for 2 weeks and can't find anything that's clean in and out well modded with under 120,000 miles in my budget, this car checked all the boxes. Great mods all around from engine to suspension, pretty clean in and out, heat and ac worked, adult owned. Ect. If anyone knows of any in North Jersey or close to it please let me know...

That car was probably ridden like a hooker in the Amsterdam red-light district.

If you're still serious about the car, take it to a mechanic and have cylinder pressure and leak-down test performed. Look for oil in the inlet tract. I could very well be there's oil sitting in the intake and only getting scooped up at WOT (nothing a catch-can can't fix).

IF - big IF - if it's clean body, interior, etc wise. No rust, signs of a wreck etc. Negotiate the price to account for needing a motor and go for it. I've bought plenty that needed engines but accounted for that in the price. Take whatever you think you'll spend on the motor and double it budget wise.

You might want to start looking further out. Seriously. I've had this discussions with friends, co-workers etc for YEARS. Demand for certain cars / trucks can vary A LOT depending on region (Subarus in the NE vs warm weather states) as can the odds of cars getting rusty from winters, humidity, salt air and how they treat the roads.

$7500 for a normal GT? That should buy a you a CLEAN, rust free, ready to drive car with no major issues. Just a few quick example in VA

I bet you could land that car for $5500 and have $2K for mods left over

The market is cooling down on just about everything. Check this LOW mile ragtop that sold for just over your budget back in November

Expand your search area. Plane tickets are cheap, even cheaper to talk a buddy into a road trip for the right car. Get the seller to send a video of a COLD start and a walk around and driving it. Serious sellers not trying to hide anything should have zero issues doing that.

Hey FYI -
I put that mach1 in my watched list. The seller sent me an offer of $6,412 to buy it.
LOL!
Honestly a Mach1 engine running/not knocking with all accessories and with a working manual transmission is easily worth $4K.
The body needs paint, fresh set of matching wheels, and some simple interior trim pieces and an upper back seat.
All easy to get.

If it wasn't in CA, I might consider buying it myself!
Ryan

PS - I have the twin to it here, albeit slightly better condition. LOL.
