Bypassing the PCV system

Are there known drawbacks or advantages to bypassing the PCV system?

I'm wondering because I did just that over the weekend. I was changing my plugs and pulled the plastic tube that goes from the PCV valve to the top of the intake & there was oil in the intake end. I went to Pep Boys & picked up a couple breather filters, pulled both tubes (driver's (valve) side and passenger side) & put the breathers in their place on top of the valve covers. I left the pcv valve in place & just connected the breather to it. I also picked up a hodgepodge pack of plugs in the Help! aisle and plugged the hole in the intake & the one in the factory accordian tube, just before the TB.

I figured this would be easier than having the valve cover replaced, and may have a slight advantage in non-WOT performance/efficiency because I am eliminating the small amount of hot crankcase air from my intake charge.

Anyone else done this? Comments/questions/opinions?

Advantage: No loss of power due to vacuum or pressure build up in the engine.

Drawbacks: Breather valve makes the car stink sometimes and may be illegal in some states.

I just put a fuel filter on the line on the way to the manifold. So far it has worked great. I posted a how-to here. Search for it.
