C4 hesitation

I have a C4 transmission in my 66 and it's been sitting for a while since my car is getting rebuilt. Took the car for a test drive and it seems to be hesitating coming out of second gear as you accelerate. Like I said...it's been sitting a while at least 3 years. Any advice on how to proceed ?

Check the vacuum line going to the modulator for leaks, or the modulator itself for problems.

do you mean that it wont shift or it holds it for a while before it shifts? Or when your at full throttle, it wont shift until you pull your foot off the gas....whats going on....

Took it around the neighborhood and it won't shift out of first gear AT ALL. I can accelerate, I can take my foot off of it and it won't go into another gear. It's pretty frustrating because that's the only part of the restoration that hasn't been touched. Any ideas ?

i had all kinds of weird problems with my old c4 before i got a new one. the biggest problem was mating a 40 year old tranny to a brand new engine. but what it turned out to be was the pump drive on the tranny had broke off completely.

A governor on a 66?!?! i thought that came out with the EFI too give it a "top speed"

Uh...no.

The governer in your automatic is how your tranny senses vehicle speed. Automatics have had em since about the time they were invented.

Not the same type of governer you are thinking of.

dont trip bro, i'm only 20 and been doing the "car thing" for only like a year and half.... , I like to think i know plenty, but it never hurts to learn something new even if you took a crack at it and you were wrong, thats how you learn.....remember we were all in the same boat as you at one time

Make sure you have vacuum from the manifold to the transmission modulator. The modulator is on the passenger side at the rear. If you have good vacuum, the problem is internal and can several different things. I've been rebuilding the C4 for many years. Your best bet is to find a guru living near you. Locate the nearest mustang club and ask for help. Good luck.

No worries! The newer cars do have top speed that are limited, for a lack of better term, governers. These usually work through the computer to limit fuel and/or spark at high speeds to limit how fast the car can go. These also existed to some extent back to the late 60s with cars like the Boss 302, which had an electronic rev limiter to keep people from blowing their motors up. I think Ford installed it to reduce warranty claims more than out of any concern for safety.

Back on topic, I would replace the modulator, check vacuum to it, flush and replace fluid completely and go throight the service procedure for adjusting the bands. If that doesn't fix it, out it comes.
