c4 pan install

i installed a new pan on my c4. and i have leaks around the pan. looks to be from between pan and gasket. i used a rubber gasket AND rtv. was the rtv a bad idea and the tranny fluid can get through it?

atf has far more cleaning agents in it than engine oil does, but that shouldnt have cauesd any problems. it sounds like you might have overtightened the pan bolts. even with a rubber gasket and rtv you can damage the gasket to the point it wont seal if they are overtightened. when you replace the gasket again, dont use the rtv, and just tighten the pan bolts untill the gasket starts to just bulge. also check the pan and make sure the gasket surface is clean and level with no high spots around the bolt holes.

I agree. Either use one or the other. The RTV makes the rubber so slippery that it will squeeze out where ever it can and it will leak. RTV is used to replace many gaskets in the new vehicles. If you are going to use the rubber gasket, you can put some spots of adhesive on the pan to hold it in place for installation. DON'T overtorque the pan bolts!

I usually put a thick bead of RTV on the pan then finger tighten it. After about 20 min. I snug it up. I put a cork gasket on a turbo 350 once and over tightened it. It split at every bolt. Been using RTV ever since.

I use aluminum pans and a cork gasket, install it dry,torque to 10 ft-lbs, never a drop of leakage. Sheetmetal pans always leak.

Yep, got tired of it and put in the aluminum with a thick flange. No leaks so far. The metal pans get dimples in them from use ove the years. So when you tightend, all that touchs is dimple to gasket.
