The screen is just a safety precaution for any debris that might get in the inlet pipe. If you have a decent filter then no problems.

For the guy asking the question...
"rich" = more fuel in the air/fuel ratio
"lean" = more air in the air/fule ratio

I'm running a K&N CAI without the screen and get short spikes to about 11 on my LM-1 A/F meter during cruise. I wanted to run some tests with the screen back in to see if the spikes will go away, BUT when I looked at the screen, I noticed it has a lip (flange) that extends from the edge of the seal around the screen. and I can't remember which way the lip faced when I took it out. Can anyone tell me which way it reinstalls?

I would call the ford dealership and check on which we it sits. I would like the results of your test
