Cam change: Timing chain and valve springs need to be replaced?

I'm in the process of intalling a Comp XE256H Cam (Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 256/ 268, Lift .477/ .484). I wasn't planning on replacing my timing chain becuase this engine still has less than 6000 miles on it. How much play in the chain would require a replacement? Also, I wasn't planning on replacing the valve springs, not only becuase the engine was recently rebuilt, but also because this cam isn't that big. What do you suggest?

Would you re-use a condom?

Is the price of your motor really worth saving 50-80 bucks for a new timing chain and gears?

Now the chances are 99.999999% that its fine, but why take the chance.

IMHO .... A L W A Y S run the springs that the manufacturer reccomends for their cam.

Again, is it worth the risk to save a hundred or two, only to coil bind one, break the head off the valve, punch it through a piston or a head, bend a rod, maybe window the block in the process.....

Just a thought.

Well, thats my question exactly. Would these parts ruin the engine?

I definitely would do it. Especially if you are running one of those old factory single chains. Ford racing makes some really nice double roller timing chains. CJponyparts has them for a lot cheaper than summit or anywhere else for that matter. $65 for a steel sprocket one, they are very nice it's what I put in my car.

Yup, and I would replace the water pump on my new motor too!

That cam is fairly mild, I have one. I would do the chain and gears with Comps parts as their gear is timed for the cam. I think it's 4 degrees advanced. The springs will be more of a hassle and you can definitely run the stock springs with that cam. Unfortunately, it will void Comps warranty.

Of course, cam warranties are semi-worthless anyway. They will replace the cam, but if I wipe out a cam, the last thing I am worried about is the $80 cam they will replace.

If you've got a double roller timing set now, reuse it, the amount of stretch you show is negligable, might have been from the first few miles of operation. A new set might do likewise. As for the springs, I looked in Comp's catalog, and they do not recommend using stock springs with any Extreme energy cam.

What if I just got a new one, a factory style new one? It would be single, but at least it would be new?

go to Autozone. Cloyes (a fairly good name in timing chains) is 19.99 for gears and chain. I got mine and it fit pretty tight which is exactly what you want

A used double roller set is better than a new single row anyday. You used to be able to just replace the chain, don't know if they sell em like that now though.

please help me to be less ignorant guys, i thought i heard somewhere that there was some kind of clearance issue when adding a double chain on an old smallblock. like something needed to be modified or something? is this true in any way, or is it a bolt on conversion?

Slipped mine right on (well, wasn't exactly that easy but went on) without any mods.

Hey i've explained this before that water pump is great, sure shes not perfect but what water pump isn't?

One for the old pump so that she may last. If I post a thread about my water pump I'll keep my eyes open for you max power.
