Recently put the RPM cam in my otherwise mild 66 289. Got all the issues worked out, waiting for 4.11's in the mail.

The car REALLY hates the 2.79's. Its hard to get it rolling, acceleration seems to be held back, and the cam just isn't performing as it should. Does a rear gear really make the cam pretty much a dog, I know the cam is made for light cars with aftermarket rear gears, but is 2.79's just too much for the cam to handle?

I was planning on getting the 4.11's, and they should be here today... just wondering if when edelbrock recommends aftermarket gears like a 3.55, do they really mean it as far as the cam being a dog with stock gears

the gears will make a big difference in how the car runs due to the powerband of the cam.

I had 3.80's and it was great.your 4.11's should be meven more fun!!!!

yes it does make a huge difference. My car /cam hated my 2.73's. The rpms while cruising were 2 low. Car would buck. Then swapping out to the 3.73 gears the car really started to perform.

$125 is cheap...hope he does good work!

The gears made a big difference when I went from the 2.80 to the 3.55s, that 4.11 is going to make the car feel WAY different.

He is an old timer, said he has been doing rearends and transmissions for 35 years at the same shop he owns... had me stuck there for 15 minutes about back in the day how his brother and him used to race fords and chevy

Usually the older the mechanic, the more experienced and proper job they do

rememeber that the performer rpm cam starts working at around 2000-2500 rpm. the 4.11's you plan on installing are a bit steep, but will work well as long as you have an overdrive, or dont spend much time on the freeway.

I have a T5 with overdrive, so it should be manageable on the highway. I don't like to go too fast with these cars anyways, steering boxes and brakes leave a lot to improve
