Camshaft Positioning Issue

Hello I'm new to this forum but I'm hoping one of you may know what my issue is.


Last week my car was sputtering and cylinders 5 and 6 were misfiring then it just broke down. The Obd2 reader said it was the camshaft positioning sensor. I replaced it but the car will only start and sputter for a few seconds then shut right back off also the old sensor was all chewed up on the end. I can't quite figure out what else it could be. I also don't believe it's the alternator since I just replaced it about a month ago. If you have any ideas I'm open to anything.

Did you make sure the new Cam sensor isn't chewed up on the end? Something had to eat the old one and it that problem wasn't fixed, it probably ate the new sensor.

I was only able to get it started twice and for barely any time then I checked the sensor and no damage.

Probably need to pull your front cover and check the chain guides, unfortunately.

I actually just did that last night and the drivers side seems good and tight (which is weird since that's the side the CPS was hit on) but the passenger side has nearly enough play to pull it all the way off the tooth. It doesn't look like the tensioner is putting any pressure on it.

Red_LX, how did you resolve this issue? Wondering if you timing chain jumped?

If the tensioner lost tension, it could also be that the guides gave out. You probably want a timing chain set. Read directions carefully, everything has to be set just right when installing. Valve covers and front cover have to come off to get to them.
How many miles on the car?
