holy crap man, haven't seen you on in a while (this is c2see21). glad ya got to keep the stang while you were on your mission. & with your compression with the head swap, you should do nitrous

You're going to have the same problem as the original poster. Getting around the 10.4:1 compression ratio. Unless you're willing to drop the compression by either swapping heads, or changing pistons, I'd suggest a pass.

Is there any supercharger I can get without swapping heads or changing pistons?

If you haven't done a PI swap yet then any blower will work as long as you keep it under 8lbs of boost and get a good tune with it. Forged Pistons/Rods are always recommended though!

You’re going to need something with an intercooler/aftercooler. It's not impossible to supercharge a high compression engine, just not with the SVO unit that doesn't come with or have the ability to add an aftercooler. The Mach 1 guys are getting blown and they’re in and around 10.5:1 compression, but keeping things under 6-7psi for the most part. You might want to check out one of ATI's kits. They come standard with an aftercooler. Or you could check out one of the other Centrifugals (Vortech, Paxton) and run them with water methanol injection.

You could go with one of the Positive Displacement designs like a Kenne Bell unit, but then you're running into the same problem you would have had, had you been using the SVO charger....too much heat! A solution to this would be to opt for the intercooled version of the KB, but it's an awfully big expense and a big waste of potential since you’re still going to have to keep things in the 5-6psi range because of the compression ratio.

One other option would be an AED unit like the one I've got on my Cougar. They come standard with an intercooler and if run in the 6psi range, shouldn't pose a problem with your current compression ratio. The only thing you'd really have to do would be to port match the intake runners to the PI heads. Which is quite easy, since that's what I did to mine. It would give you about the same power level as an SVO blower run at normal compression.

So many choices, huh?

He has a NON pi 96 GT.. so YES this blower will work for him. I've got one on my NON Pi headed 96GTS and its a great little blower.. makes good power (and i've only got the 5lb pulley on) and sounds pretty damn good.

Now.. does anyone know where i can find a 10lb pulley for mine? I've asked rheinhardt Racing and they want $150 for a pulley, there has to be someone cheaper than that.

I was browsing on ebay, and saw this thing. Is it any good?
Also, my 4.6 SOHC was headswapped, so I have a higher compression, can I run this Supercharger? Anyone that knows, let me know..always looking for a few extra ponies..

Thanks!

I got a little confused by the replies so I am just going to respond to the orginal post.

Since you say you are PI this means increased compression which means even more suceptibility to detonation by a warmer charge of intake air such as that coming from an forced induction device. With high compression intercooling to lower the temperature of the intake air is critical to avoid severe detonation. Severe detonation can cause catastrophic engine failure. Even though catastrophic engine failure can make for some great photos, it can be quite expensive...

And as was said, nitrous is your best choice. In my opinion taking the PI stuff off, which was installed at significant expense, is crazy talk. Not worth it just to get FI imho Do nitrous or just trade the car for one that is more suitable for your plans.

Sorry, yeah I misread his post. This kit will work well with a Non-PI Mustang. I don't know why I was under the impression that he was head swapped? Been hanging around here too long, I guess.

Regardless……invertmast, you'll never be able to run a 10psi pulley on a non-intercooled SVO (FRPP) blower. The most I’ve seen anyone run on one of these on pump gas for the street is about 7psi. Unless you can figure out how to rig up some sort of water/methanol injection system that can be installed somewhere within the discharge path, you're not going to see any more than that either. There are a couple of guys over at www.tccoa.com that have them on their MN12’s, you might want to see what they’ve got to say about it before looking to hard for a pulley.

I've seen alot of guys running 9psi pulleys w/o an intercooler, so i dont see why i cant run atleast 9psi...

But i've got to put a new motor in my 96GTS (it started knocking this morning)..

Sooo.. Should i slap in a 99+ motor and put on the little FRPP blower, or just get another 96-98 motor?

you can use this blower it would be a good deal for you.. gearbanger knows his stuff but i think he misread your mods..

btw gearbanger is right on about going back too the npi heads with a good port job and putting this blower on.. for the price you cant beat it.

I bet the guys that you've seen running 9psi without an aftercooler were running Centrifugal blowers though, right? Centrifugals don't make near the heat that an Eaton or a Twin Screw does. Because of this, they're able to push the envelope a little further without worry of spoiling the air charge.

If you're going to put a new engine in your car, go with the complete PI engine. The runners of the SVO blower can be gasket matched to the PI heads with ease and you're going to make much, much more power with the later engine and that blower, than you would another NPI engine. It might even drop a pound or two of boost because of the additional flow potential and allow you to run a little smaller pulley for even more power still.

Nope.. the guys running 9psi were using this same SVO/FRPP blower... When you say gasket match, do you mean having the intake runners ported to match the PI head ports? Cause if soo, i don't have the $$$ for that..

And i just bought a set of compe XE268H cams.. those will still fit in the PI heads right?

9psi is really pushing things with that blower. Without some top notch fuel and some cool weather, I wouldn't want to be running those boost levels for very long. Keep in mind, that the '03-'04 SVT Cobra uses that very same blower (with a different manifold design obviously) and they're factory driven at around 8psi and come with full heavy duty aftercooler. Now, since the FRPP manifold is considerably a lesser flowing unit than the one on the Cobra, boost levels are going to be higher since there is an increase in backpressure. So the SVO/FRPP unit may actually be showing higher boost levels, but moving less air. But either way.....I wouldn't want to be caught running 9psi with one on a hot day in stop and go traffic.

As far as gasket matching....yes, porting the intake runners to match the PI head is what I'm referring to. It's really very easy and probably something you're able to do yourself if you've ever used a die-grinder. Even if you're not able to it yourself, if you can afford to replace the engine, I'm sure you can afford another couple of hundred bucks to have someone do this for you. Either way, it’s not completely mandatory….it’s just going to net you better results. Possibly in the 20rwhp range.

As far as the cams go.....I don't think the NPI cams will work with the PI heads. If memory serves, there was something different between the two, but you're probably best to speak to someone at CompCams about that.

I did P&P a set of heads on my Old 97GT when i did the PI swap to it.. so im pretty sure i can gasket match the blower intake. I'll call up comp and ask them about those cams.. cause if not, i just wasted $250 unless i decide to get another non pi motor.. I'm "hoping" the knocking is just caused by a breakdown in engine oil, as yesterday I was running the car pretty hard and it wasn't knocking, but when i got in the car today and started it up it was.. so imma change the oil and hope for the best. Any idea where's the best place to pickup a used motor for fairly cheap (around $1k?). As i'll be lucky if i can come up w/ the $$$ to buy a motor, let alone another dremel tool to gasket match the blower.

Check Ebay or a local salvage yard. They're usually not too hard to find.

Well, i'm getting ready to stick in a set of Comp XE268H cams, once i get a new motor.... So i'll let ya know how those work out..

But seeing how it seems like you get around 10-15rwhp gain by sticking a set of PI cams in a NPI motor.. I'd stick a set in anways..

PI cams, most definitely. The additional lift on both intake and exhaust side will promote better cylinder fill and evacuation. Probably good for another 15hp when used in conjunction with the blower.

NPI cam specs:
.466" intake lift
.466" exhaust lift
184 degrees intake duration @.050"
196 degrees exhaust duration @.050"

Vs

PI cam specs
.510" intake lift
.530" exhaust lift
184 degrees intake duration @.050"
196 degrees exhaust duration @.050"

Here's a 98 with pi heads 10.5:1 compression 8-10 psi making 545 rwhp and 652 rwhp with a shot of nitrous on the stock short block.

http://forums.modulardepot.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=77334&highlight=stock+short+block
650 rwhp 2 Valve!!!!!!!
Welcome me to the 600 horsepower club!!!
Actually the 650 rwhp club!!!!

I made 545 rwhp STD on my normal tune.
I made 652 rwhp STD with a whiff of nitrous spraying on the heat exchanger (however I believe a small amount may have been sucked into the mass air meter).

To recap, I have a stock 98 shortblock including rods, pistons, and crank all circa 1998 from Ford!!!!!

Enjoy!!

Ryan
