Can a Tranny Cooler be to Big??

I was reading online everywhere that the bigger the tranny cooler the better. So i was looking on jegs and got perma cool 30,000 gvw, with installation kit. I got it and the thing is huge. I will be able to fit it behind the front bumper, so i was still going to use it. I just didnt want to use it if it is too big.

The bigger it is, the more cooling it will do. Just make sure that the fluid is still circulating through it. I'd run the car with the exit of the cooler open for a moment just to make sure you have good fluid velocity coming out of the cooler.

If it is a stacked plate cooler, it should be self regulating.

If a fin/tube cooler, I might install a t-stat since you live in the cold.

Can transmission fluid be "too cold", Hissin? I was under the impression that the colder the transmission is running, the better...

I got a tranny temp gauge, what should i try and keep the temp at? How low and how high?

After I put a new AOD in my bronco I put the biggest B&M cooler on it as I wanted to bypass the rad. cooler alltogether. I talked to the wifes uncle who is a Sr. mast. mech at an SVT dealership (an has worked in that capacity for over 20yrs) and others that said "those autos create so much heat you realy cannot over cool them" They esp. stated that about the AOD...it apparently creates ALOT of heat.

Shawn, I pondered this too. Hydraulic fluid can be less sensitive to 'being too cool' than other fluids. I run only the stand-alone cooler - no heat exchanger in the radiator. And I can barely get the temps to register on my trans temp gauge.

I was concerned with this and sent Don a PM and he pretty much said to not sweat it too much.

I am glad to hear some feedback from your guys' friends/family who work on this stuff. I still kinda worry about 100* tranny fluid, but maybe I dont need to. I still like the idea of having some sort of temp regulation if you live somewhere real real cold. I could be wrong though (I live in the desert and keeping temps down in my main concern).

The sweet spot is to keep temps under 170*F or so.

Mricci, where are you going to locate your temp sender? That can slightly alter the temps you want to observe.

my old AODE used to get REALLY hot, you could feel the heat comin threw the trans tunnel on your legs and all up the shifter handle

With the gauge i got it will be installed in the transmision pan. Its an electric autometer one.
