Can you make an open diff. act like a posi with some springs and discs

I have a 3.25 pumpkin tha I got from a guy. He said when he bought the guy he got it from took the open diff and put some springs and discs in and now it acts like a posi. He was laying down rubber with both tires. Can this be true and how does it work. I looked into the diff and see some kind of springs where the spider gears go and the 3.55 I have does not have them. Is this how a posi has springs setup?. It also kind makes a catching sound when I turn the diff, like a clunk, like the gears inside are engaging. how can I check this with it sitting on the ground?

I have heard of doing this. It actually puts the rearend in a bind to perform the locking action.

As I see it, anything put in a bind is going to do the other "B" word - break!

I have a friend who bought a "TOR loc" from a guy. Its some concoction this guy came up with, he takes an open diff, machines the inside to accept clutches, and puts it together. We traded a toploader for a posi 3rd member. When it arrived we thought we had been had. The guy explained it to us, we opened it up and it was true. But, the macine work took the metal down very thin. He hit low 13s in his 66 coupe. And, occasionally it would peg leg on him durring burnouts.
Another note, there was a kit out a while back that you could install some cube looking thing that converted an open into a posi. I have one somewhere I picked up in a trade a long time ago but again, I don't have much faith in it.

a clutch in the diff engages only when under heavy load (spins both wheels). under normal acceleration, clutch only engages one wheel

"Poor man's posi"...durability is a serious concern, just don't ever get too much traction or drive it too hard and it might last.

Has anyone seen one of those ARB Airlockers used? I know that they make them for the 9" rears, just not sure which style. I've also seen them used on the front diff of Jeeps and Jeepers swear by them.

Never seen the airlocker on a hotrod, 4X4 guys love em to death though.

sounds like the PowerTrax No-slip like I have in my 9" open rear - it is a locker. It makes some clicking and clunks once in a while but very liveable so far. I have put some 75w140 full synthetic lube in the case to quiet it down and am planning on adding some friction modifier to it like posi clutches need (even though there are no clutches) in hopes that it will make it stop the clicking while going slightly left or right. Does anybody know if my old 9" 28 spline will be ok with this extra heavy weight gear oil in it or will it wear it out quickly? So far it does not seem to get too hot after highway use but I do seem to hear a little bit of whine at times in coast or under power.

You could always do the lincoln locker. Weld the gears together with a lincoln welder.

I also have a Power Trax in my 8 inch open rear. Makes the rear stonger than a real posi or so they say. I run a built 347 with fuel injection and a blower and burn the ***** out of the tires, (True posi burns on the road) all the time. I love it, the clicking noise it makes going around corners dont bother me as I have a american thunder exhaust. It does get scary when you try to burn rubber going around corners because it will lock then unlock all the time and through the car in every direction, SO do burnouts going straight.
Very easy to install, no special tools needed.
It will empty your wallet about $400.00

arb's are loved by wheelers,

im running a OX locker, its a slectable locker but has a cable and lever so there is no air compressor or any electrical wiring.

could be a lunch box locker, or some sort of one u install in a open diff.

i was thinking about doing a ARB on my mustang some day.

It depends on how you are going to use the car. If it will only see street use an open diff. will be easier on your rear tires and quiet. If you are planning on doing a lot of smokey burnouts with both tires add a posi or locker unit to it.
