The S tirm kit I bought says that is bolts to Alt to the smog pump bracket. DO you have to have the smog pump or delete kit or can I keep the way it is now. I have no a/c or smog.

having smog or not doesnt matter. but with vortech's brackets. you HAVE to have a pulley there in its place. if not you cant install the belt.

when i was N/A i deleted it, you can do that with no blower and still route the belt.
but with the blower i need something there. so i put the smog pump on, it locked up a few hours after i got it running with the blower. it happens to alot of people. running the smog pump not hooked up usually results in them locking up. and i mean LOCK up, it ruined my belt. you know when it happens, its a horrid squeal.

what you need is the ASP smog elimnator kit. comes with an alum block that will bolt in place of the pump and has a pulley that freewheels. the ASP one has a small hole on the bottom to locate the alternator on the vortech brackets. some older smog deletes didnt have this.

you will see once you start assembling it.

summing it all up...yes you will need a smog delete deal. get the ASP one, i got mine from summit i am pretty sure. its cheap and works awesome.

If you are running cats, you need to have a smog pump. Smog pump provides air to the cats to keep them cool. Otherwise you will burn them up.

You need the dummy pulley there just to route the belt properly for the blower.

I couldn't agree with you more as this car is the ONLY one I've ever had with an air pump so obviously it's just to help with passing emissions.

I never really traced it out but the diagram shows one line to cat(s) and one line to the engine from the ACV valve from the air pump. I have to assume it must go to the intake??? There are 3 valves in line - two of which are vacuum operated from the computer. I have an 84 which is pretty stock except for the updated exhaust using 86 headers. All the emissions still work.

I replaced the air pump simply because it lasted forever and the replacement airpump only cost $32 compared to $90 for an idler pulley assy. No brain work required there. I can't believe there's much HP lost in that free wheeling air pump?

There was a recent post describing in detail the new routing and length of belts to use when deleting the AC and or the Smog pump which would be the cheapo way out.

I honestly can't remember where. I got it 2 years ago from some small company. Try March though, they usually have the pulley stuff.
