cant get the pinion gear out of an explorer 8.8 at the junkyard. i got everything else out but that. it should just slide out right? if your looking at it from the drive shaft side you can see the big washer with the roller bearing behind it. is there something else that holds it?? thanks for any help.

You have to draw the pinion into the bearing with the crush washer and the torque wrench on the initial crush so the pinion is lined up or say it has to crush that washer to set the pre-load on the torque to drive shaft spline. You know, the X to Y can only go do deep is the shim and all that.

So, you more or less need to hammer or press out the pinion out of the bearing, is I think that's the same as a Dana is standard ring and pinion assembly.

Removing the pinion nut and taping the pinion from the other side should get it out no problem. You did remove the nut, right? Are you removing these gears to put into your mustang's 8.8?

I had to smack the hell out of mine with a three pound hammer to get it out, but unfortunately I damaged the threads where the pinion nut goes. If you are going to be smacking on it put a block of wood on the end and hit the piece of wood.

or you can put the pinion nut on the pinion and then smack and run the nut back out. no need for wood
