Per my previos thread (now sadly history), I'm thinking about installing a Canton Oil Pan 7 quart as part of my engine strip down. Previous a couple of guys said that they liked the product and it provided superior oil pressure when cornering over the Cobra T pan which I now have.

On guy, and I forget his name, warned me that I would have to spent a good deal of time cleaning the pan, paint stripper, garden hose, compressed air. This really confused me. Are they not clean when you buy them?

the sheetmetal pans are phosphate coated and have no maching done (other than the drilled holes, or are they 'punched'), so I don't know what that guy meant either. I'd maybe blow it out with some compressed air, just in case some dust/debris got in there during packaging, but it should be pretty clean.

7qt pans (chrome) can be bought on Ebay for less than $100. They also come with a pick up. They are nearly identical to the canton pans.

You should wipe it out with a degreaser (wax/grease remover works well, or brake cleaner). Just make sure it is clean. that is what I did with my canton pan last summer.

If you are running a girdle you might have to slightly reshape it with a hammer.

Not sure what's in there yet. I'll have a better idea when I remove the old pan this weekend.

All the Canton pans i've seen have been pretty clean. Like any product going on a engine, a good wiping/blowing out isn't a bad idea.

That guy was probably talking about the pan rail on the engine, not the oil pan itself.

Are you putting the new pan on while the engine is in the car? If so, good luck. I did that last year, what a nightmare.

are you using bolts or studs? If I could do it over I would use studs.

i think maybe he was trying say something about how to prep on for paint, the process you describe sounds about right to get the paint to adhere to that type of coated pan

Canton oil pan - Ford dipstick ?

With the Canton street type oil pan can you still use the normal Ford dipstick through the timing chain cover installation?

original guy here.

they cut and weld an oe pan to make up a "T" pan

the welded joints need to be cleaned up bigtime

mine took about 1 hour or so
as far as oil control it works SO much better than a cobra T pans the baffels in a cobra pan are only side to side like this l l
cantons baffels or trap doors are in a <>
diamond around the oil pickup

I had oil presure issues with the cobra t but with the canton pan I've had zero issues oh and there's a BUNG to added so you can add a oil temp gauge ANYONE interested in a fast '67 fastback? mine can be had

I was able to but the dip stick barely hits the front baffle. I have to work it around a little to get it to skip past it so that it wll seat all the way. If I had it to do over again or the next time I drop the pan I will notch it so the dip stick clears the baffle.

i have pan and have nothing but good things to say about it.

i'm running a front mount dipstick and haven't ever had it hang up on anything.

true, on mine I had to bend one of the baffles on the side down slighty to get it to fit. The fit and finish on the Canton is excellent and it has never leaked once installed................until after two years one of the factory welds starting seeping slightly on the bottom "T" part.

Someone said engine harmonics could have caused it, but seeing that my engine was 100% balanced during the build I contribute it to just a faulty factory weld.

All that being said I will probably go with a Canton again as on the curves my oil pressure stays high and like I said the fit and finish really seemed good.

Jim, you're selling? Are you looking to start another project or are you getting out all together? If you have any parts laying around, let me know what you have and I'll make an offer. As for the beast, you should get some good coin with all you have put into it. You definitely have a wicked ride.
