Car back from shop

i would pull the tfi module, take it and have it checked. I would also replace the pickup in the dist. this could def. cause a miss. I would also pull the coil and have them check it. You also need to turn that fuel pressure down if that is 45 at idle no vacuum, i would say around 40-42, and it that is with vacuum that is way too high

Who can test my TFI and coil? Autozone? I cant find an adapter for the fuel rail around here anywhere and the one I was using had the center pintle break so I have to still adjust FP right. Would the TPS cause a constant speed miss? I was under the impression it was more of an idle thing

Hey CivicEater
sorry to hear your stang is running poorly. if this cheers you up, i am studying abroad in Australia and there are a lot of sick cars here. Supra's and Skylines are all over the place, but even cooler are the ford falcons. these cars here are pretty sweet, but they do drive on the other side of the road. Oh and when you get here expect to pay like $2 a liter (not a gallon).

where are you moving to in Australia. I am close to Sydney, I am studying at Macquarie University.
Oh and a new Falcon here runs around $50k Australian,
for reference about $70us is equal to $100 aus.

some guys here have had fires in their engine bays lately, some with extinguishers, some without. i dont want to steer you in the wrong direction but "it could happen to you"
With under $2 bucks in the bank and a dying stang, if your car did catch on fire you could get some of your hard earned money back.

Now i am not saying to go out and set your car a blaze because if i were i could get in serious trouble (jail), and you could too(court/fines/jail time), but accidents happen
(and you cant take your car with you to Aussie Land)

For the record, i know i sound like a scum bag for typing this to all of you out there, so its important for me to let you all know that i would never do anything to scam my insurance company or hurt my stang for quick cash. I make plenty of money to fund my addictions by building affordable housing!

dude i feel so bad for you if you were in texas, i would drive to come clean out all your bugs one weekend.

and texas is BIG

set your tps at .996-.999. you do this by getting a multimeter (you can borrow one form a parts store.) put the ground on a good ground.... the strap to your hood insulator.

and stick the other one into the wires.

do this with the car in the a/c position but not running.

there are 3 and one will have a constant vultage. the other will range up to 5volts as you open the throttle blade.

at the idle position, it should be in the .996-.999 range. losen the screws and turn it until you see the multimeter in this range. It may require removing the IAc so you can take it off and drill out the holes on the tps so it will turn far enough to get to the correct range.

ABOUT YOUR AF GUAGE

i have one too. those guages are based on votage and only read at WOT. you can actually KIND OF tune off this if you know what voltage is what A/F

remember this. the stoich signal is 14.9 not where you wnat it to be. you want it well into the rich area of the lights.

my a/f was 13.1 on the dyno and it reads second to the last green square at WOT.

most likely your pickup is bad. or "stator"

you cant replace this at home. you must remove the distributor and have a press to remove the gear to slide the shaft out and put the new stator in and then put it back on and nail the pin in.

you might want to just invest in a new distributor or make friends with a tech at some shop.... ford techs make really good friends ;)

dont take your tfi to autozone. they will 99% of the time tell you its bad and sell you a new one. they told me mine was bad and it wasnt. it was the wire form the tfi to the distributor that had melted. check that connector BTW where it connects. autozone doesnt have the stuff to properly test the tfi iin real world situations.

oreileys > autozone

and what is wrong with your afpr? i have an extra one here.

I hope my post is helpful unlike my usual criticising arrogant posts. :D

also, you can replace all yoru vaccum lines easily and check all yoru gaskets fr vaccuum leaks with a little starter fluid sprayed at the gasket.

dont pay someone that rediculous price. you and your buddies can do it in a day with basic tools and some high temp VHT for a good seal.

and you will always have us here to ask questions as you progress if you run into problems.

Fawcett......I am sorry man but I was just joking around about moving...lol..I was making a joke about selling the car not becuase it runs like **** but becuase I had a "move"

Snoozer.....So you think the TPS could have a constant speed miss issue not just a idle thing? I am going to rent a voltmeter either tomrow or tuesday and test mine. I was also hesitant about bringing anthing to autozone or the like for testing becuase they tested 3 alternators for me and said they were bad but two were just fine. I am confused with my A/F guage because I have backed the AFPR screw out mabye 4 or 5 full turns and it is still running exactly the same on the guage. I just have to buy a new adapter from summit becuase noone around here carries them. I noticed you said "Most likely your stator is bad" ...so I guess that is where your money is on some of my problems. Anyway to test or codes that it would throw? I dont wanna pull it and have ot have it pressed out if it isnt it  .... I have been spraying carb cleaner looking for leaks, but you are saying starting fluid..any difference in the effects? If I do happen to have a leak back there I would replace it myself like you said, I am only worried becuase I have done it 2 times already and if it is leaking that just shows I am messing it up. It is simple though so I ahte to throw another 300 at this *****.
And you post was very helpful, I was also wondering when the mocking was gonna come in lol:)

i wouldnt think its your tps... but adjusting that is a good idea

mine would hit like that and miss and even go as far as shutting off on the interstate.

it was the wire from the tfi module to the pickup/stator that had melted. due to a loose ground strap from the botched shortblock install

the wires/pickup and maaaybe module will do this missing.

does it feel like the car missed so bad it turned off for a split second and then caught itself?

a bad tfi module will act up when its hot.

what kind of smoke are you experiencing and form where?

At first I thought the awful idle was just on a "cold" startup and that the miss is on warm but I have had it going for about a week and both seem to occur no matter when the car was last run. The miss doesnt seem to be a "almost shutoff" its more of a ... driving around 2k in like 4th gear and it seems like the engine is firing but missing a cylinder and the car has a "jerk" to it. It will happen somtimes intermittanly but when it starts it will do it usually for a few minutes. It will do it in any gear but most noticibly in 4th and 5th. The smoke is coming from the tail pipes and only when I give it some good gas. Like if I get it up to 3 or 4k for a second. I usally dont see it becuase I am flooring it but I know it smells gasy and doesnt linger in the air it disappears almost instantly. I cant really see color but it looked grayish from the one time I did see it for a second.
