car backfiring

finally got the car started back up after pulling it to clean up the engine bay.

i put in a new cam and timing chain. the engine runs but when i rev it up it backfires. My boss was helping me out and we got the timing set good but he was telling me it was probably a rocker adjustment or carb problem? sound right or have any suggestions yo sstop the back firing?

Does it back fire through the carb or exhaust.
You did put the timing gears and chain on correct, right.

12* of advance.....make sure. Check your timing first....if timing doesnt fix it....move to the next most obvious clue...your timing chain and cam.

im 99.9 percent sure the timing chain is alligned right.

it only backfires once and a while when trying to start it and it back fires through the carb. the timing was set by ear but ill try and get a timing light to get it perfect. im gonna try everything before i try the timing chain seeing that everything is installed and painted nicely. im 99.9 percent sure its not the timing chain though. starter went to **** so im gonna have to get a new one before i can go any further. worth going for a hi-torque convertor? may have to make that long 5 minute drive to NPD to get a new one.

i would say the timing chain, but i have also had a few backfires myself when the distibuter was not timed right, and even if the vaccum advance is off it could also add to ur problems.

If you are still running points check the gap, heck even if it's a pertronix check the gap, a little off will cause a back fire for sure, especially if they are dual points.

BTW, timing the car by ear is just fine, so long as it is not pinging you should give it as much advance as it likes. It may end up at 12 or 13* BTDC as being optimal but no body can just tell you what to set it at, heck stock setting is 6* BTDC so what does that tell you.

already fixed the firing order.

i will double check the gap on the petronix and keep on checking the timing

i dont want it to be the timing chain
