Today i was driving around town and when i came to a stop and the car was idling it died so i started it back up and drove a little ways and when i came to a stop it died again. Ive noticed that the RPM needle hunts up and down at idle and the engine idle kinda surges up and down. While the car is driving its fine but just today it died a few times on idle. What can the problem be?

Help me out, thanks.

Mine used to did when coming to a stop and would start right up. Turned out both my o2 sensors were bad and no check engine light EVER came on. Good luck

Ive read the most common problems are the IAC, throttle body, maf, or tps. What do you guys think?

Check your IAC first. This exact same thing happened to me today. I went to AutoZone becuase they run codes for free and sure enough i had 4 codes (no check engine light) all relating to the IAC valve. And this was making my car run very rich as well.

It actually died the first time as i was pulling up to put gas in it, and it did it again when i left the gas station, then again at an intersection. (I thought all gas is unleaded?)

Yea SmithCobra what the heck are you talking about? I'd go to an autozone and check your cpu for codes. Also check underhood for vaccum leaks...

my car had the same problem, dying randomly after some driving. it was usually when the car had been driven for a while. it would die then it wouldn't turn on for a few minutes. after reading some posts on here, i figured that it was the stator, also called the profile ignition pick-up or the hall effects sensor (at autozone they called it the pick-up coil). the piece itself was about 20 bucks and it was a 30 dollar install (i could have done it myself but my dad took it to get done instead). the piece goes inside your distributor and the distributor needs to be removed to install it. hopefully this helps!

Any vac hoses checkem behind the intake and along the fire wall. Make sure are conected or they don't have holes in them. I like to use the carb cleaner method get some carb cleaner and spray it in some small sections. If it starts to idle up and down the leak in that area.

Mine just did this today too. Guess it's time to hunt myself. Codes are my first place to look. That and make sure the air filter is clean. Dirt plus water = mud.
