Car running funny, AFR all over the place

if you had a gauge with a digital readout you would see whats really going on. anyways i'm done trying to help. if you would like to try to convince someone of something just b/c your gauge doesnt move go ahead.

bottom line: mine is tuned right, the AFR jumps around, same goes for many other cars.

good luck finding your problem, (which is most likely fuel related)

That's you opinion. Personally, for me, it's much easier to glance at an analog gauge and comprehend the AFR value. A digital readout ends up being a bunch of blinking/flashing lights (which is probably what you wanted anyway).

Again, I'm speaking from experience that is pertinent to the thread starter's situation. Your "you obviously have no idea what i drive, do you?!?!?" car doesn't pertain to this situation. So, if YOU'D like to try to convince someone of something just b/c your gauge is "all over the place", go ahead. Just be sure to share your list of mods with them, so they understand that they are likely nowhere near comparing apples to apples.

Great, we're all happy that you're happy. But you stated it yourself, "well FWIW i have also checked 2 other cars with widebands and the AFR was between 12.5 and 16 at idle. both cars were FI (s/c and turbo)". All you have established here is that cars with FI have a bouncy AFR at idle.

Again, I'm speaking from experience that is pertinent to the thread starter's situation. Your "you obviously have no idea what i drive, do you?!?!?" car doesn't pertain to this situation. would you not call that all over?? i guess when your making less than 300 with no cams or any type of FI it is easy to peg your AFR at one number

:stirpot: I've got the DIY wideband with the honda sensor. I don't have a gauge, so when I need to check the AFR, I use my DIGITAL volt meter and reference a table. On my 97 GT, the AFR holds steady at idle, right around 14.7:1 (2.50v). This is normal and should be expected with a stock cam and a good running engine. The AFR on the 88 varies, but this is because the tune and VAM door style air meter is crap.

However, it is also very reasonable for the AFR to vary at idle. Wilder cam grinds do not run steadily at idle. There is a certain amount of reversion and they tend to chug and cough, as they draw a poor vacuum. The engine will also occasionally miss. The AFR can also vary significantly if there is a miss. All of these cause the AFR to vary. When a cylinder misses, it will immidiately show rich on your wideband beacuse there is significant amount of extra oxygen.
