Ok guys I will try to be descriptive as possible. Car ran great for a year and a half or so and made a trip to the store. Car was off for about two hours, started her up made it about a mile and it sputtered and shut off. Car would crank but not start. Fast forward to today (mind you I havnt driven the car for 3 weeks after this incident). Started the car just fine drove about 2 miles, car was reaching operating temp, sputtered and jerked a little, small backfire and it shut off. Let the car cool down for about 10 min, it started up fine, drove it home a mile and shut it off. I then started it up again and it idled for about 10 minuets and shut off. Fuel pump is priming just fine. It will start just fine when car is not hot. I tried the crank but no start checklist with no luck. Thinking its possible due to my distributer or the tfi module because it starts to cut out and shuts off when getting to certain temperature. For the record I bypassed my msd box and replaced the fuel filter and those are not contributing to the problem

Sounds like you may have a bad TFI module or the pip sensor is going bad.

If you did the Cranks OK, but No Start Checklist for Fuel Injected 5.0 Mustangs model years 1986-1995 and you get no spark when the engine is hot, the TFI or PIP is the culprit. Use a Noid light to check the injectors for pulse when the engine will not run. No pulse from the Noid light and it is the PIP sensor. Noid light pulse OK, then it is the TFI.

JKA and jrichker thank you that is what I was looking for! Jrichker in your opinion would it be advantageous to just replace the distributer regardless to avoid any future problems as well? If so, I have heard that the auto parts low dollar distributers are not all that inferior to the higher end msd ones, would you recommend I just get one from o'rielleys, napa or autozone. Regardless I will update with the solution in the event someone else runs into an issue relating to mine.

Rant or product review?
Wells Ampco should be avoided unless you are stranded already. We got a BIG bad batch of HEI 4 lug ignition modules, and I had another one fail from them. If they can not make about the most popular part number right, how will they make the Ford stuff?
Borg and Napa's Echlin are aftermarket parts I will run, but it seems everything is made in China that is not made in Mexico.

There seems to be nothing made in America except babies - this is still the best place in the world to be born. Everything else is imported and is often of inferior quality.

Americans invent and design things and then big corporations move production offshore. It makes stuff less expensive to produce and purchase, but at what cost? Do that long enough and no one here will be able to buy much of anything besides agricultural products. Only a small percentage of people will make enough money to buy the big dollar items - Doctor, Lawyer, Corporate management, Corporate engineering & design, etc. All the rest of us will be underpaid and overworked. We need to bring production back to the USA.
We need more things made in USA: good quality and reasonable (not cheap) prices.

Now that the rant is over, I need to get back to work fixing the made in China computer speaker system for my Christian ministry for nursing homes...

You can just go to autozone or advance and buy a distributor that comes with a new module. It will have a limited lifetime warranty but just make sure you get the distributor that has steel gears. And good luck on finding something that's made in America..half of the stuff under my hood said made in mexico.

If I had a dollar for every computer that was replaced because it was suspect and techs didn't do the diagnostic work before replacing it, I could easily buy a 2015 Mustang GT with all the goodies. The computer is probably the most reliable part of the system. The wiring, sensors, and actuators are the high failure items.

@nonglossjason: I would do the diagnostic work and buy what failed the tests. There will be other opportunities to buy goodies and what you save can go towards purchasing them. The one comment I head about Richporter was that it seemed to be good stuff.

No no no no no NO!

I bought one of these and the distributor shaft seized to the bushing before I even got out of the garage. It dumped a ton of aluminum shaving into my engine, stay far away.

Ok guys checked with the noid light and it flashed when cranking so I replaced the TFI module and it fixed the issue. HOWEVER, since doing that I now have a ticking that increases with rpm. It sounds like a header gasket exhaust leak but all is tight and it happened as soon as I replaced the tfi so it would be a rather odd coincidence that this happened at the exact same time. Sounds like it could also be a lifter or rocker arm possibly but I will leave that up to the professionals here. Any opinions? View: https://vimeo.com/122218722

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me..but it could also be the timing since you had to move the distributor to replace the TFI module . Did you mark the base of the distributor before you moved it replaced the TFI module ?

I did mark it yes. I need to use a timing light I think but I don't have one, maybe I should back it off a little just to see if it makes a difference.

It stinks when the smart and decent folks get old. I vote to not allow @jrichker to get old, senile, grumpy or crotchety! I have had to watch too many friends go downhill until they could not even remember how to play their favorite songs and axes anymore. You are not allowed to go there!!!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I can't stop aging and am well past the 30's mark. However, I will try to help fellow Mustang enthusiasts whenever I can.
