When i go out to start my 2001 GT, it will start, and then just die unless I keep giving it gas. Its an auto, and i can hold the brake down and keep the rpm's up by giving it gas while i put it in drive, then take off, but when i let off, it lugs down in the rpm's wanting to die.

I took the Diablo tune out thinking it might have something to do with it, but it still does it. :(

Any ideas before i have to take it to the Ford Stealership?

Thanks for any help!!! :hail2:

The iac or idle air control motor is probably bad. I have replaced several of them for customers with 99-01 gt's, including my own. Symptoms are the same as yours. You can try and take it off and clean it out with gum cutter (carb/tb cleaner) or just replace it. It is not that expensive (should be under 100 bucks) and is very easy to replace. It takes 5 minutes to replace.

If I had a pic of the engine bay, I could point it out. It is bolted to the upper intake plenum and has two bolts. It has one electrical connector plugged onto it and one large rubber tube (not vacuum line small, but not intake tube large) running from it to your intake tubing or piping. It is bolted facing you as you look under the hood.

IAC, sorry crappy 20 second job :P

I think they are 8mm bolts, you can pull out the vacumm hose near the bottom bolt to get better access (its a small pain sometimes)

Yall are awesome!!! Right after i asked where it was i searched and saw a pic of one on a Mach 1 and then found mine even thought it was a different spot on my car. I checked at Nauto Zone and they said they didnt have an IAC "Motor", but they could get a IAC "Valve" and it was $51.99 and they can have it tomorrow. Are these the same things? I would guess, but wanted to make sure before i ordered it. If it is, and this fixes it...i owe yall some beer.

Thanks some more,

Jake

Mine does it when it rains a lot. Did it the other day and was fine when the sun came out for about 2 hrs and dried it all up. Who knows...
I had a car that did that once. It would rain and the car would develope a miss. Once it dried out, it ran fine. Turns out it was bad spark plug wires. When's the last time you changed yours. Check them out. Pearl02.

89GT isnt a mod motor.
Nawww. Thanks for pointing that out. He said that the motor would start but it would not stay running. It has been pinpointed to what it may be but, you have to narrow things down. The last time I checked, I don't care what kind of motor you have, the fuel pump supplies fuel to the motor. If the fuel pump is bad, I don't care what kind of motor you have, you are not going anywhere. Although a 5.0 and a 4.6 are different motors, the fuel is supplied basically the same way, courtesy of a fuel pump.... :damnit:

I'm having the exact same problem with my 2001 GT auto. I'm going to pick my new IAC up today. Hope it works out.
