car still cranking over with keys not in car??

i went out and started my car and i could hear something was very wrong when i started it so i took the key out but when i took the key out my car was still craking over, it wouldnt rev when i pushed the gas in but the belt was still moving and the starter ( i think) was still cranking. should i replace the starter? help!! i have to work tomorrow

It could be the starter relay sticking. Try tapping on it when the starter stays engaged liek that. If it stop, then go with a starter relay..

Yea, sounds like starter relay. Do what Myke86GT said. Then replace the relay, as it will stick again.

You may want to look into upgrading to the 95 starter, all you need to do is move a few wires, and run a trigger wire to the starter and you will never have this problem again.

Yep, right by the coil with all the wire hooked to it.. Just be sure to hook all of them back up and on the correct lugs.. Take a pic or write down what goes where if you are unsure..

A very low battery start can cause the relay to stick as well....

ive replaced it before cuz it burnt out, so i think i have a spare one at the house, should i still replace the starter?

Another solenoid vote. Very unlikely that it's the starter [bendix hanging up].

And the comment about low battery charge is spot on.

You can do quick diagnostics with the starter cable at the solenoid if desired.

no nasty smells or smoke, but it cranked until my battery died. how hard is it to change my starter?

Tap your relay with a small hammer or something like that and it should stop, you dont want to let it crank till the battery dies.Does it stick every time you go to crank it over? I had the very same problem with my car.

i had the same thing happen to me once. some idot i took my car in to get the starter checked out by the garage that installed it. well the mechanic was starting my car a few times and fried my starter relay. the car just kept cranking and cranking and cranking. so i disconnected the relay and told the mechanic to get the F out and never touch my car again. needless to say although the starter is still covered by their warrenty i will never go back to them again. and yes i had to replace the relay $12, starts find now.

BUY A NEW SELONOID. MAKE SURE YOU GET A MOTORCRAFT SELONOID , BECAUSE ALL OF MY EXPERIENCE WITH AFTERMARKET ONES WERE REAL BAD. THEY ONLY LAST 2 DAYS AT MOST.

I'd plan on replacing the starter in the near future.

Starter motors work very hard, and generate a lot of heat very quickly. You should not run a starter for more than about 30 seconds (total cranking time) without giving it 5 minutes or more to cool down.

You've probably lost a couple of years off the life of your starter because of the prolonged, continuous cranking.

just to let you know, my buddy had the same problem with his car a few years ago and we swapped my solenoid onto his car to see if that was it and it still did it. turned out it was the starter.

Not sure how the starter could still be cranking /w a good realy... the relay would have cut the pos juice. The relay has to feed it juice, it has no other way to turn over. Mabey a bad starter fried the relay... by pulling to much juice and not moving etc.

More likely your bad relay burned the starter out by causing it to crank to much. I've had a relay do this a few times and continue to work properly for a year and then go out again. It eventually went out. Be warey of that relay, if you havn't replaced it when the starter went down... cheap part to replace, like $10.

Just change the darn relay and put a Good battery (fully charged) in it and drive the thing.....If the voltage drops below 9 volts it will cause the relay to stick...GEEESH... View attachment 440206
