Car trouble on the Holidays! Help and Merry Christmas!

Hey guys! First off- Merry Christmas! Hope everyone is having a safe and happy holidays. Gots a question for you all and see if you've had a similar problem like this before and point me to it first. Friend brought her 2003 Cavalier 5 speed over to the house and says it dies everytime she stops at a light, stop sign, or turn. If you turn it on and it idles it stays going but if you give it gas and then the RPMs come back down to idle- it dies- unless you put it in nuetral and keep the RPMs up. Happens no matter what gear you're in and even in neutral- have to keep the petal depressed or it dies. I haven't been under the hood but I don't wanna go chasing a problem in a car thats under warrenty still, but I do want save my friend an inspection fee when we can figure out at least what's wrong ourselves. If any of you "die hard" SN forum guys are still on here even now, instead of with your friends and families for the holidays, then you make this forum worth it and are the reason why we can always count on the threads Again Merry Christmas!

If he performed any mods to the car, then the problem started, I would look there first.

Second, I would check the codes. The obdII cars are much more complex & the computer should have an idea of what's going on.

There were no mods done to the car. Guess we can take it over to the parts store and have the codes read after Christmas. Anybody else?

and if all else fails, clean the IAC. does this only happen at a standstill or while rolling?

i'd think that'd be an alternator connection? but it stays at idle when you just turn it on... ionno

that was my uneducated hypothesis, then i asked my dad the mechanic...

told him it was the 2005 cavelier... 6cyl chevy, immediately he said it was the maf. He suggests turning the car on and when at idle, tap the maf and if it changes idle, that's it... also, when it's dieing (although this would be hard since it's only when you stop), tap the maf and see if it comes back

k, he just told me it could be the idle cellanoid (sp?)... that's it for tonight...

Do you mean the IAC valve? Ok I'll check all the the air induction stuff and all the connections in the morning. Thanks guys.

well, he said it could be called the iac valve, but he said the idle solenoid switch

hey oceanside, googled a little and found this article.. any relevance?

Question: 1991 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 4 cyl. My car will start strong and drive well until the engine gets normal temperature. I try to stop and the car will jerk and stall if I don't flip the trans to neutral. Sometimes I can stop while the trans is in neutral and I can put it back in drive and proceed. This only works a couple times. Then when I stop I put it in drive and it will stall. Now I need to wait until it cools down. I changed the ignition module and now it runs a little smoother in idle. I read the forum and saw that it could be the TCC solenoid. Where is the TCC solenoid? I looked in my book and can't seem to find it.

Answer: The TCC solenoid is located in the transmission on the valve body. To verify that this is causing your problem, disconnect the four wire plug that plugs into the side of the transmission and drive the car. If your problem is cured, replace the solenoid.

Very interesting but I've never heard of that soleniod before. Have to see if there is a four wire connector on there to see if that is the problem. Sounds like the same problem to me. I'll drive it around today for her and see what happens. Thanks man

Negative. TCC is Torque Convertor Clutch. Torque convertors are only in automatics and If i read right, her car is a 5 spd. I would check for the IAC valve, though i am a tech for Ford and dont play with chebbys much, something should be present there. If it's a 2003, take it to the dealer.... make use of that good ole warranty cause more than likely, somethings gonna need to be replaced

Could it be a vacuum leak of some kind? Are her RPM's higher than normal? maybe a vacuum hose is loose somewhere and she's sucking a bunch of unmetered air into the engine. This would cause it to run at the higher RPMS but crap out at idle...
