heres the deal everytime i try and start the car i get a clicking sound from the starter. its not the starter because its new, its not the the ground i have 2 engine grounds, i even moved the battery to the front of the car from the trunk , its not the starter solenoid its new and its not the battery its new . Its weird it just started happening it was starting great then one day it started clicking, its really pissing me off i have checked everything i even had the starter tested, i was wondering if it could the cable from the starter to solenoid how do i check for that what should be the resistance any help would be much appreciated  :bang:

Have you checked the voltage of the battery? Did you try to jump start it or push start it? Just because the battery's new doesn't mean it's not dead. Something could have drained it. Do you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to the run position?

I agree. Put a charger on the battery. I like to use spare jumper cables to augment what's on the car. I will parallel the OEM cables with my jumper (one at a time) till it starts. WHen it starts, the cable being paralleled is deficient.

Also post the year of stang (usernames are not always indicative) and style of starter (OEM, Ford Mini, aftermarket mini, etc).

JRichker has a nice little no-crank checklist you might want to run through.

Good luck.

No Crank checklist for 5.0 Mustangs

Since some of the tests will bypass the safety interlocks, make sure that the car is in neutral and the parking brake is set. Becoming a pancake isn’t part of the repair process…

Check battery, terminal connections, ground, starter relay switch (also known as solenoid) and starter in that order. The clamp on with 2 bolts battery terminal ends are a know problem causer.

A voltmeter is handy if you are familiar with how to use it to find bad connections. Measure the voltage drop across a connection: more than .5 volts across a connection indicates a problem.
See http://www.fluke.com/application_notes/automotive/circuit.asp?AGID=1&SID=103 for help for help troubleshooting voltage drops across grounds.

1.) Will the car start if it is jumped? Then clean battery terminals and check battery.

2.) Check the battery to engine block ground, and the ground behind the engine to the firewall.

3.) Jump the big terminals on the starter relay next to the battery with a screwdriver - watch out for the sparks! If the engine cranks, the starter and power wiring is good. The starter relay is also known as a starter solenoid.

4.) Then pull the small push on connector (small red/blue wire) off the starter solenoid (Looks like it is stuck on a screw). Then jump between the screw and the terminal that is connected to the battery. If it starts, the relay is good and your problem is in the rest of the circuit.

5.) Remember to check the ignition switch, neutral safety switch on auto trans and the clutch safety switch on manual trans cars. If they are good, then you have wiring problems.

6.) The starter may be hung, loosen up the bolts that hold it on, and give it a good whack with a big hammer. Tighten up the bolts and try again.

7.) If that doesn't work, use a jumper cable from the positive lead on the battery direct to the starter post where the big wire from the relay connects. If it cranks then, it is the power wire from the relay gone bad. This will be hard to do, since there isn't much room to do it.

8.) Pull the starter and take it to Autozone or Pep Boys and have them test it. Starter fails test, then replace it. If you got this far, the starter is probably bad.

it is a 93 mustang and yes i had the battery checked and i tryed to push start it and still nothing it has the 93 starter on it, the car is 93 mustang 331 stroker h/c/i with a vortech y- trim, can i please get some more ideas

Go back and work your way through the checklist I posted. One step at a time, do all the steps. You may find something you overlooked.

dang jrichker... you work at a ford dealer or something?... those are some really good diagrams

alright i went threw the list and i still get clicking noise from starter. i pulled the plugs and turned the crank with a rachet so the engine is not locked up. i turned the motor over with the starter and the plugs out and it turn the motor over but slowy with the charger. my battery is in the trunk so i have the + cable going striaght to the starter. i brought the battery to the front of the car to bypass the cable and still a clicking noise. i checked the both engine grounds and they look fine. it cant be the starter because its new and its been tested. i am running out of ideas here someone help:bang:

Visual checks will often miss the proplem. You have a bad connection somewhere.

Jump the big terminals on the starter relay next to the battery with a screwdriver - watch out for the sparks! If the engine cranks, the starter and power wiring is good. The starter relay is also known as a starter solenoid.

If that does not work, get out your voltmeter and do the voltage drop tests.

A voltmeter is handy if you are familiar with how to use it to find bad connections. Measure the voltage drop across a connection: more than .5 volts across a connection indicates a problem.

Rear mounted batteries often have ground problems. Here's the fix.

Rear mounted battery ground wiring. Follow this plan and you will have zero
ground problems.

One 1 gauge or 1/0 gauge wire from battery negative post to a clean shiny spot
on the chassis near the battery. Use a 5/16” bolt and bolt it down to make the
rear ground. Use a 1 gauge or 1/0 gauge wire from the rear ground bolt to a clean
shiny spot on the block.

One 4 gauge wire from the block where you connected the battery ground wire to
the chassis ground where the battery was mounted up front. Use a 5/16” bolt
and bolt down the 4 gauge engine to chassis ground, make sure that it the metal
around the bolt is clean & shiny. This is the alternator power ground.

The computer has a dedicated power ground wire with a cylindrical quick connect
(about 2 ½”long by 1” diameter. It comes out of the wiring harness near the
ignition coil & starter solenoid (or relay). Be sure to bolt it to the chassis ground
in the same place as you bolted the alternator power ground. This is an
absolute don’t overlook it item for EFI cars

Note: The quick disconnect may have fallen victim to damage or removal by
a previous owner. However, it is still of utmost importance that the black/green
wires have a high quality ground..

Crimp or even better, solder the lugs on the all the wire. The local auto stereo
shop will have them if the auto parts store doesn't. Use some heat shrink tubing
to cover the lugs and make things look nice.
