Heres the story The car is an 86 efi with and auto it is all stock. I pulled the motor to change the oil pan. Trans stayed in the car. I had some trouble with the install and put it in and the converter wasnt in all the way. I did NOT start the car. I pulled it all apart and I think I got it right. Anyway I go to start the car tonight it wont start. I bypass the igntion and start it with the soleniod and it started and the reverse lights were in. The car was in reverse. I climb underneath the car and pushed the linkage ahead into park and the car started fine after that. Then I went to put it into drive and the car wouldnt move. It stalled and I put it back into park and no start again. Now I can push the car in any gear. The shifter says Park but the car pushes like its in neutral. Any suggestions? Is my linkage messed up? Is this a torque converter issue? What should I look for? Thanks for the help.

sounds to me like a linkage issue. Will the car start without bypassing the starter solenoid? like try starting the car in Park, Neutral, REverse, drive see if it starts in any of these selections. be careful!
