I put a new battery in, put the positive cable on first then the negative cable. Smoke then started coming from the soleniod area. I didn't have the negative cable tightened so i removed it from the battery. I placed the negative cable back on and tried to start the car but it would crank over but wouldn't start. I replaced the solenoid and connected everything back up but now the car won't even crank. The old solenoid had 3 prongs on it and the new one has 4. I hooked everything up the way it was with the 3 pronged Solenoid. Don't know what i need to check or replace next.

Sounds like you have the wrong starter solenoid. The stock solenoid has two large posts and one small one.
