car won't stay running - any ideas?

I swapped on my GT40P's and intake today.
the car won't stay running. We've checked and re-checked timing and verified TDC and sometimes we can get it to idle for a few seconds on its own (very roughly), sometimes we can't get it to start at all. They're trying all different dizzy positions, etc.
Could this be a distributor problem itself?
Is the only way to know for sure to replace it?
The car and dist. have been fine, until we tried to fire it tonight.
If I keep my foot on the gas, the car will stay running.
Any ideas?

new specific questions:
1.) If it were a timing problem, would it allow me to keep the car alive w/ the throttle open?

2.) If it were a dizzy prob., would it ""?

3.) If it were a vacuum leak, ""?

Any ideas?

MAF or SD?
Have you checked for vac leaks (ether works best)?
Have you reset the computer?

OK, update:
I ran the codes, and I got IAC, MAP, and rich condition. When we take the IAC off the motor, it runs fine- idles VERY high and loud, but stays running no problem. As soon as we put it back on, it dies. We think the wiring to the IAC is not working, and we're looking into it now.

we put new ground wires and cleaned the ground contacts on the head, and it still has the same behavior - put on the IAC and it dies.
Take it off the TB and it runs (high rpm).
What's up?

If you take the IAC off then you can adjust the tb throttle screw to bring it down. Sounds like you might need a new IAC go to napa and get a new one put it on but becareful not to make any marks or scratchs on it and if it solves the problem then good if not take it back and say you didnt use it for some reason. Did this last week with my new motor.

here it is:
The port we had the MAP sensor hooked up to on the manifold had no vacuum. THis in turn killed the IAC. We hooked up the MAP sensor and VOILA!! ALl good.
Now, we have to take down the top and re-adjust the rockers.....
Great.
AR LEAST SHE"S RUNNING!

We got it running after 14 straight hours of buildup. 4 of those were trouble shooting.

I appreciate all your help bro!! Seriously, we were there until 2:00 in the morning and it was dismal-looking!! Are you sure it was only 4 hours? I thought we first tried to fire it around 8, which would make it 6 hrs. of troubleshooting!!!!!
Hey, right after you left, the cops cam to the shop cuz they got a noise complaint from the people who live across the street!!!!
They came in and asked us "who was doin' the Fast and the Furious"?!?!
I told him I was testing my car in the parking lot after fixing it and apologized. He told me what the local ordinance was, and then told my brother that he needed to order rims from him next week!!!
It was awesome though, some good times
Car runs alot harder and PULLS after 4 grand. This is the 1st time I've had haeds and intake on any of my Mustangs, so the diference is huge to me!

Again, I appreciate you comin' up!!

And actually, it was more like 16 hrs. You were ther @ 10, and left @ 2.
16 hours!!!!!!!!!!

Don't know what my schedule's like, but I'd def, like to go to the track and see how it's improved. The pulls ALOT harder now, but my issue now will be traction. Even stock engine, I couldn't get any better than 2.3 60's. Now with the new combo, I'm hurtin' for traction even on the street!
The new power is fun, but it won't help if I can't plant t.
But yeah, i'd like to go back to the track and see what's up!

Oh, and that kid who couldn't figure out where to put the oil cap. After putting it in the Thermostat housing then the distributor hole we finally told him. LOL!

Dude, that's awesome!! I was working on painting the TB and EGR at the time and I never heard what the joke was all about!!! That musta been hysterical (I know everyone else thought it was!!).
I'm definitely still getting used to the car. Throttle response is 10 times greater than before, and the temp is running very cool, so I'm very happy
What's the weather supposed to be like this Wed.?
