If I try to start the car normally it won't. It will sputter on then die.

If I start the car and give it a little gas at the same time it will run, as soon as I take my foot off the gas, or let the RPMs drop, the car dies.

I had to be somewhere this morning and this screwed it up. Any help/insight would be appreciated.

Clean your IAC, I bet that's the problem. When mine went out the first time it had the symptoms you describe. Had to give it gas just to stay alive. If it stays on after you clean it - then I would suggest to buy a new Motorcraft IAC. (yea, ask me why - been through 2 IAC's that were not Motorcraft)

For a pic of the IAC - take a look at the sticky at the top of the forum "4.6 Tech Important Threads"

Thanks for the help. It was indeed the IAC. I cleaned it out and now she runs just fine. I will be picking up a new one just to be safe

rebelleader's wouldn't stay running unless he pressed on the accelerator pedal. What is your symptom - starts okay, but high idle?

Have you done a search also? I know I've posted a thread on starts but dies (same as his), and two others on starts but idles high after driving. This last time it was my TPS that went out. I checked it by disconnecting the TPS when it was idling at 3000, and it would idle just fine.

By the way, I would suggest resetting the computer when you clean / change the IAC...

Just out of curiosity. Was it damp out when you had the problem? I have the same problem but it only happens in the rain or on damp days. I cleaned my IAC out but still have the same issues. I still might get a new IAC but this seems to be a common problem with mustangs

I had parked the car outside and it snowed ~2inches. I moved the car in the garage overnight, then tried to start it in the morning. I guess the dampness could have been an issue

I am going to hold off on buying a new IAC right now. I have a road trip coming up in May, so I will do a bunch of maintenance before then.

I'd say that most of us here have replaced the IAC at some point in time, it's is such a common part to fail on our stangs. Usually one tries to clean it for a quick fix, but eventually it becomes necessary to replace it.

Mine did it again the other day when it was raining out. Went to start it after work and no go unless I had my foot on the gas. So I have to hold the break at stop sings and lights so I can keep my foot on the gas to keep the rpms up and its sapose to rain tomorrow. Looks like another no start day for me. Guess I should call ford and get a new IAC.
