Had a scary thing happen the other day, just got done changing a blown head gasket, and torque converter. I put the motor in, buttoned it all up and took it for a blast... when I mashed the throttle, it continued accelerating (or at least pulling hard) after I let off the gas. It all happened so fast I couldnt diagnose whether the gas pedal was stuck down or not.

Normal, I'd think binding linkage or serious vacuum leak.. but the car is a race car, and and there's not much in the way of vacuum hoses.. I did snug down the carburetor a bit more just to be safe. The thing that tells me its probably not a vacuum leak is the car idles perfect, and doesn't hunt at all. I just replaced the base plate on my carb with a Pro-form aluminum baseplate because my stock holley base plate had a cracked bolt-down ear. I'm wondering if the baseplate bound up...

At idle, the rpms drop quickly with no hang up or delay at all... this is another reason I don't think its a vacuum leak..
I'm going to buy a new throttle return spring to be safe...

any other ideas?

your throttle cable could be binding up, or your pedal is physically getting stuck on something, carpet, etc

Try playing with the throttle with the engine not running. Have a helper press the accelerator pedal while you watch the throttle butterflies and linkage.
