carb/fuel issue 289 2 barrel

Hello, I am pretty new to old stangs and I know very little about carb setups. My 68/289/auto has been running pretty well until this morning. I went out for a quick ride around the block and it died about 3 times. I was able to get it home and it would start and die right out. I tested the fuel pump(it's fine) and I replaced my fuel filter and blew out the lines. Pump is pumping plenty of fuel. The car will run if I pour gas in the carb, then it dies out after a minute or so. I can rev the engine a bit and see gas going in out of the circle looking things in the carb, then the gas goes away and the car dies. Any ideas? Do I need a new/rebuilt carb? Is there something simple I can check? I already took the carb off and sprayed it with carb cleaner and checked the small filter I have going into the carb. Some rust material did come out. Help! Stock carb BTW.

Thanks,
Ross

If you're quite sure the fuel pump is working and is pumping enough fuel (check a service manual on doing a volume test if you're not sure), it's probably a sticky needle and seat in your float bowl. The sure-fire cure is to take the carb apart, clean out the fuel inlet and remove whatever garbage is holding the valve closed. Sometimes, however, you can get lucky and just give the carburetor a couple of sharp taps right near the fuel inlet. Don't go nuts with a hammer - the carb body is aluminum and it's easy to do some damage!

That's worked for me more than once to clear the gunk without getting your hands dirty. Besides, it has Fonz-like "cool" appeal when it works...

Edit -- warning about carb fragility...

Well I went ahead and took the top of the carb off to clean the "bowl," there was a ton of brown stuff in there!(rust?) I blasted it all out with some carb cleaner and put a new inlet filter on. Fired right up and is running pretty good. Has a little stumble just off idle, but it had that before. Hopefully it will keep going until I can upgrade to a decent aluminum intake and a 4 barrel. Thanks for the help!!
