Carb opinion?

I have an 1bbl autolite 1100 on my 170cid, it's original. It runs ok.
I am wondering if it is worth fixing up? I was going to send it to CJ Pony, or would it be better worth the money to buy a brand new Holley or something else. It would be $300 for the repair and with that I could surely get a brand new one.
I don't plan on doing any major mods to the engine, but rather keeping it original, clean it ,maybe send out the head, redo the crank etc.
I already have a 2010 mustang I can rip it up in.

You can save yourself some time and send it directly to Pony Carbs for the rebuild. They have rebuilt 2 1100 carbs for me, do good work and back it up if you have any problems. One little trick with the 170 is to either get the larger carb from the 200 engine or have your 170 venturi replaced with the one for the 200 during the Pony Carbs rebuild.

There are no "new" carbs for the 1V engine*. The Autolite 1100 was an excellent carb, and a child could rebuild it.

*I stand corrected. Pony Carbs builds a replica of the 1100, with design upgrades.

you might want to step up to a later autolite 1101, or even a carter YF as they work better than the 1100 does. you will likely have to open up the log opening to use the later carbs though.

In order to step up to a newer carburetor, you will have to change your distributor as your original is the Load-O-Matic with no mechanical advance. Pony Carbs does make a "new" carburetor called the Vaporizer that uses the annular flow of the 2100 and 4100 carburetors but looks just like the 1100.

That option to use a newer distributor is only viable if you have a 1965 or newer casting 170 as the 1964 and older castings use a different distributor shaft.

Hey I asked my child to rebuild it and he just looked at me???

I think I will do the Pony rebuild and the venturi upgrade.

Well, I had a 12-year-old assistant for a week last summer who'd have done it, but I was upholstering seats, so she worked on them. She did help with some other mechanical repairs. I told her next summer she learns how to weld. She can't wait.

Although mine is only 8 he has already just this summer done some initial welding. Not too shabby, but yah with the carb he just looked at me.
