my brother just got a 1984 gt and he wants a new carb and intake manifold they were thinking about a eldelbrock performer carb and manifold, would you recomend a 600 cfm with manual or electric coke? and also what would be involved with taking the cruise control out?

Thanks
Adam

I'm taking it that the 84' is mostly stock. If so I would keep it simple and go with an Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake. As for carb choice, I have never been a big fan of the Edelbrock Carbs when it comes to Maximum performance. When it comes to Economy wise though, the Performer Carbs are definetly a good way to go if you are on a budget. If funds permit, Barry Grant's Road Demon or Speed Demon Vacuum Secondary series would be the only way to go. They offer both excellent Economy, Performance & Tuneability. (Not that it matters, but they look sweet) Do not go any bigger than 650CFM. Try to stay below it. As for Electric or Manual Choke it is mostly your prefference. Electric is nice to have for ease of starting, but has it's problem's to, since they require more maitinence and can sometimes cause Air Cleaner Clearence Problems (If using Big Drop Base)(They are also more money). It's your call though. If there are plans to highly modify the engine in the future buy the Edelbrock carb for now and save money instead of buying the more expensive Demon Carb when you will end up having to get a higher CFM one later anyhow.

If you go with the Edelbrock Carb, go with the manual choke for sure, unless the car is going to be started in cold weather.

408 is right on... the Brock stuff is pretty straight foward, and will respond to hiper tuning... the problem is... NO one wants to trick one up!! but bolt on and go... they are good!! electric choke!! Hell yeah, esp in Ct.

Me??? I like the Weiand Stealth and Holley 1850 ( 600 cfm vac secondary) for basic street cruise , and the 3310 ( 750 Vac ) for hiperformance street strip!!

Just me.......................

Edelbrock is garbage. Either run a Road Demon 625, or a Holley 650. Either can be had with electric choke, and they are just as easy to install. I have an 85 and my old engine combo was Ecam, rpm intake, demon 625, and exhaust, and I ran a 13.8, and I never touched the carb. Rpm intake all the way, or for less get the cheap knockoff intake from ebay or something, they are polished and for less money. You'll do just fine with a vacuum secondary unless your really going to race that thing. But my javelin had a vacuum secondary and it ran 12.8 at 112 mph. You dont always need a double pumper. And bigger is not always better.

thanks for the input guys, and it is not the cruise control that my brother wants out it is the selenoid on the drivers side of the carb that raises the idle when the A/C is on and he would like to know if there is a way to take it out without messing anything else up.

Thanks
Adam

yea i have the exact same car, I bought the Edelbrock and very pleased with it. I wanted a Demon Carb, but i was too poor. I had a 600 CFM holley and it was junk i could never get it to run right. The edelbrock was almost dead on from the box. I also got a performer manifold couldnt be happier so go edelbrock with electric choke it works great. Also about the unhooking the fast idle it just unhooks and i threw mine away no problems. Just a thought
