Catalytic Converter(less) and Exhaust Note?

I am shopping for my new Mustang purchase, and I found a gorgeous '02 GT cnvt w/ 11K miles for around $18,500. It was cherry in all respects, except the previous owner removed the catalytic converter to get a deeper note from the exhaust. My question is does this effect the car in any way- performance or longevity??? Also the dealer told me that the service engine light is on because the converter was removed- is this true or was he bullshi*ing me???

If he took all the cats off, then it will cause the light to come on. Did the previous owner add an x/hpipe or just have new piping welded in where the cats were? w/o the cats, the car should have a little more hp. if he had an aftercat exhaust paired up to the catless midpipe, then it should add enough hp to feel a difference.

Two questions: one- Is there any way to turn the engine light off and two- what is an x/h pipe?

yes, they are called MIL ELIMINATORS and they just plug in to the now existing O2 sensors. they run about 60 or 70 bucks.

do a search on google or somewhere for x-pipe and h-pipe. it is in reference to the design of the midpipe (piping coming off the headers connecting to the cat-back). The stock midpipe is an h-pipe. it looks like an H. an x-pipe is shaped like an X. just do a search and look at some pics and u will understand. some of the x and h pipes have cats, some dont. the ones w/o cats are called off-road pipes (o/r). hope this helps!!!
