Last October I finally put in my warmed up 351 Lightning
w/Ebrock heads and other assorted goodies, still fairly
mild but WAY big improvement over the stock 302!
Anyway, the shortblock came with a flexplate. It was
the same teeth, the converter bolted up fine, etc.
Long story short, you can NOT use a late model light
truck 351 flexplate with an AOD. Good old Ford, they
changed the flexplate part that bolts to the converter
so the converter sits a measley 1/4" farther back into
the trans. Trashed 3 pumps and all the clutches, had
it out and in 3 times, and to 2 shops before we figured
that out!
Need to get a flexplate from a late 80's/early 90's
Crown Vic with a 351 and AOD. NAPA, AutoZone &
others carry them if you can't find one in a junkyard.
Some light trucks up thru 92 had AOD's, but apparently
not with the 351, just the 302. All the listings for the
351 light trucks show some variation of the E40D or
C6.
