Changed Rear End Diff fluid, now leaks?

Hey all, I just changed my diff fluid for the first time (90,000) in my '98 GT. It now has a small puddle under the rear end right off the dogbone. The cover is sealed ok (knock on wood). I wiped everything clean as good as I can tell before I put the plug in, but I am now wondering if I overfilled it and it is leaking from somewhere. Has anyone else experienced this? I put Mobile 1 75w90 in it with friction modifier. I don't know if it puddled up somewhere and is slowely dripping off, or if it is leaking from somewhere else. I for the life of me cannot find the source.

Should I just let it go for a few days and see what happens, I am typing this just hours after doing this. Would it leak from the plug if overfilled? I put sealant on the plug before installing, but being on jackstands, I can't see the plug enough to tell if that's where it's coming from?

Probably nothing, but just wondering about other people's experiences doing this.

Did you use RTV to make a gasket on the diff cover? If so did you give the RTV sufficient time to set up before refilling the diff?

Yes, I used Black Permatex on the diff cover and let setup for an hour before adding fluid, but that is not where the leak is coming from. It is dripping off that big metal chunk, I think is called a dogbone.

did u overfill the diff and than maybe some leaked back out..puddled on the dbone and is now leaking down?? if its not coming from the diff seal, and the fill plug is in there tight, its prob not gonna be anything.

I also agree that it is most likely due to a overfill. Just wait a couple days. It should start to diminish.

Cool, thanks guys. I will give it a few days and report back. I was thinking that was the problem, but wondering if there was any gotcha's that I missed.

I've often heard you should wait 24 hours before filling for this sort of reason.

But who has that kind of time??

When I changed the fluid in rear diff after the gears then the break in, both times we just cleaned off the surfaces really good, put some rtv on there and then started filling, and took it driving about 10 min after the fluid was in; no problems either time and shouldn't have any if ya do it right.

when I replaced rear deff fulid the first time, after i sealed it, it kept leaking. turned out that there were some fluid left in bolt hole, and did not allow RTV to cure.

U either overfilled it, or somehow oil came in contact with RTV before it cured. in that case, might as well redo it, as it'll never going to fully seal now

Why don't you just take the fill plug out and stick your finger in there to check the level? Or, when you take the plug out and oil starts coming out, just let it run out until it's where it's supposed to be.

You may not even have a leak, might just be oil dripping from somewhere ... filling a differential is a messy job ....
