When I changed mine, I just disconnected the low pressure line and drained out all of the old fluid. I then filled it with fresh fluid and started the car, Turned the wheel from side to side a few times and drained again, the repeated. Prolly did this 10 times before the fluid looked clean. I am using ATF in my powersteering pump right now.

Of course, it would help to know the year of stang you have.

Type F has a greater coefficient of friction than Mercon does. This is a case where I'd want to use the correct fluid.

If you drive a Fox Mustang, Type F should be the ONLY Fluid you run in your Power Steering System!

As Shaker said, unless you have 94+ steering components (why I was asking what you drove), it's Type F.

I use synthetic power steering fluid in mine, always have and always will. My PS pump is nice and quiet too, not like most 5.0's I hear that make that hideous groaning sound. Could possibly be the ATF causing that.

Some synthetic PS fluids meet Ford's requirement for Type F. The synthetic PS fluid I run specifically mentions this.

There was a reason for using Type F till the switch in 94. Just because something can be done doesnt mean it's the best thing. Now if I had Mercon in my PS system, would I go out of my way to swap it out? I dunno - I'd have to see how it works. However, when I change fluid, I sure try to use the recommended fluids.
MHO.
