I just replaced my intake manifold on my 89 5.0 stang and I am wondering if I remove my charcol canister and plug the vaccum going from it to the intake, will it cause any problems or issues? I have been removing weight ever since i got the car and this seems to be one more unneccasary item.thanks for the help in advance.

you will nees to cut the line shorter so that it is under the car, the line coming from the fuel tank, so you wont smell like gas all the time. Other than that iys fine to take it off, im not sure if it will pull a code or not.

if you have emmisions testing, leave it. for mine, the canister was plugged and the solenoids were toast. i just plugged the line going to my upper plenum and left the vent for the tank and put it in the fenderwell.

It will cause a code to come up...

In my opinion this is not the way to cut weight.
If this is a track only car, then OK.
If it isn't a track only car then leave the system intact. Just hide the evap. can. where it can't be seen.

To learn more about the EEC-IV system check out "Ford Fuel Injection & Electoric Engine Control, How to Understand, Service and Modify 1988-1993" written by Probst.

I took mine off and havent had any problems. take off the smog pump while youre at it if smog isnt an issue in your area. Make sure you plug all the corresponding holes too. I think you can take the smog tubes out of the back of the head and plug them with old spark plugs too(make sure you break off the white **** first though, I forget what its called:/)

If your going to plug the heads just go get some NPT plugs and put in the heads to block them off. The plugs are like 2 bucks a piece or something and is not "rigging" it.

Also I have taken 2 sets of smog systems off with charcoal canister and never had a code thrown. The only code I have ever seen thrown from that is if you unplug the solenoid that controls when the fumes from the canister get released. I always just leave the solenoid there with the plug hooked to it but no lines to it. The computer doesn't know there are no fumes to be released. As long as it senses the solenoid there its happy and does not throw a code or light.

The cat converters on your Mustang were designed to operate with the extra air provided by the smog pump. Without the extra air, the catalytic action does not function well. The cats will clog up over time, causing a loss of power.

The carbon canister vents fuel vapor into the intake manifold at cruse. This helps richen up the cruse mixture slightly. It also eliminates the gas stink when the car is closed up in the garage or other poorly ventilated place. Don’t park you car in the garage if you have a gas fired water heater, the fuel vapors are a potential explosive hazard.

If you have emissions testing in your area, plan on re-connecting it. You won't pass the visual inspection without it.
