Check engine light after cams?

So, I got my PI cams installed and after I started my car the
check engine light was on.I have no idea why I would get a check
engine light since my PI cams were installed correctly.I will get the
check engine light diagnosed very soon but,has anyone experienced
this or know what it could possibly be? My car idles just fine but,
when I drive my car as the rpm's go up the engine sounds choppy
accelerating.

Could be a few things. Cam position sensor, spark plug wires routed wrong, somehow got coolant into the plug holes and its causing arcing. you really need the code in order to pinpoint the issue

You know that is funny you say that.My car is driving just like
when my spark plugs and spark plugs wires were soaked with coolant.
My car sounds very choppy and odd when I drive it.
I will get the code with in a week or soon.I would like to know of all
the places I should look first.

well did you just do the cams or did you install the pi intake at the same time?

Just PI cams.I didn't know the cam install would turn out this way.

recheck your plug wires, you might have crossed one. Dusstbuster had a similar problem and thats what was causing it

I would reccomend not driving it if it is mis-firing badly like it sounds like it is. Maybe a short trip to the shop, but I would not drive it untill its diagnosed.

Yes, the spark plug wires are the first thing I will check.

Just for reference, I drove a 97 GT that just had the intake swapped out, and it had a horrible miss when I was driving it. It was broken up at all RPM, up high, down low... Definatly something ignition related, I suspect crossed wires or antifreeze getting where its not spose to.

My problem was noticible the moment you put the car in gear. It seemed to run a little rough at idle, but the moment you'd put it in gear it'd start popping and bucking under any sort of load. That was due to plugs 7/8 being swapped. GDAWG's install guide was where I found the pictures of which wires went to which plugs.

Pennywise, any update? You're sure the cams are properly timed? Like I said, it could be a problem with the cam position sensors too. unfortunately, I have not done the PI cam install yet so I can't comment...

Yes,I started my car this morning before I washed it and the
check engine light is still there.My cars' idle is horrible and
it seems to have a misfire or my cams are not properly timed
as you said.I am just hoping my car makes it to Ford next week
to diagnosed my check engine light.
To be honest StangGT97 PI cams are more trouble than they
are worth.If I knew that this was going to happen I would have
never installed them to begin with.

^^^ Sounds like the same boat I was in about 2 weeks ago, til I found out it was just stupidity on my part for not labeling which plug wires went where. Believe me when you get it running right you'll think it was worth it.

Any comments on the power you gained Dust? I'm wanting to do this install, though am somewhat afraid being that I haven't messed with cams before. The car is also my only transportation

Yep, I hope it is something as simple as that I wish.
All the NPI 2V people how have done the PI cam swap and have before
and after dyno sheets have seen 10-15 rwhp.Does this mod really make
a difference in the seat of the pant meter? I will see.

I have to suffer with a rental car till my car is fixed.
Can you afford the down time if something go's wrong is the question?

bingo. That's why I don't bother modding this piece of crap... it's my DD and I always run into trouble no matter what I'm doing.

Did you install the cams yourself? It is possible you skipped a tooth on the timing chain, either down on the crank or up on the cam gear (crank is more likely since you can't see down there unless cam covers are off.) So you could have everything seemingly lined up fine on the top end, but it will have skipped a tooth down where you can't see. Have you pulled all the wires and checked for moisture in the plug wells? Checked wire routing? Checked to see if the plugs somehow got fouled? Check cam sensors. All these are possibilities... but like I said, you really need to have the code pulled to know where to start looking. Any way you can get to autozone? they'll pull the code for free

Very true you will not know where to start without any codes read.
I had my Ford mechanic install my PI cams at his shop and I belive the
fool probably did skip a tooth on the timing chain either at the cam or
crank and didn't say anything to me.
I am not going to waste my time with it and I will let the Ford pros and
a Ford service department take care of it.Sorry I don't shop at Autozone
and never will they are morons.
Having worked on Subaru's for ten years if this were a problem with
a Subaru it would be a peice of cake simple as that.
