I beg to differ.. the 71' was proven to be extremely fast but they had a street test and took OEM bosses that had been stored and the 70' 429 boss took the cake.. also it finished 1st in the muscle car shootout to see what was the baddest car of the time.. it spanked "the judge", GTOs, LS1 chevelles (not the new modular type motor but the 454s), and 396 camaros.. as well as all the hemis.. of course im going off of what speed TV and many of the other popular car shows have tested and proven..

It could be a 71, most 71s had a chrome front bumper but you could also get them with the rubber one that was on all 72s and 73s. 73s had vertical front turn signals instead of the horizontal ones like whats on the 71s and 72s. You could option any 71-73 mustang however you wanted it. You could get a mach 1 without scoops, you could get a ghia with scoops and a Q-code 351. The best way to distinguish whether or not its a mach 1 other than looking at the vin that I know of is to look at the interior, mach 1s got the delux interior, which consisited of different door pannels, seats, and 3 gauges in the center of the dash above the radio.

I do know of the musclecar shootout TV show you are referring to on Speed and the Boss 429 did win (glad it did too) but there was no Boss 351 Mustang in that lineup.

Course we all know the Boss 429 had huge potential to tap into as it was less than optomized in stock form with a small 735 cfm carb, mediocre cam profile and restrictive exhaust. I've seen plenty of literature showing better 1/4 mile times for the Boss 351s over the Boss 429 and 302s and be more comparable with the '68 1/2 428 CJs.

(from what I read seems that while the Boss 429 was right there with the 351 in performance, they determined that the Boss 351 ran in the high 13s in stock form more consistently in almost every magazine test performed) - so seems depending on who was doing the testing at the time, e.t.s varied, so we'll call it a toss up

64.5 - 70, 85-93, 99-06, those are the good years. Not a fan of the early sn's either, I think its fugly.
