What is the most effective way to check for a) worn ball joints, b) worn tie rods and c) worn bushings? Changing struts so I want to make sure all else is good since I am taking it apart anyway. BTW, shouldn’t make any difference, but this is on a Ford Escape.

I'm not a suspension expert, but since no one else has responded yet, I'll give it a shot.

First sign of suspension parts going bad would probably be a clunk while you're driving.

When you have it apart, swivel the ball joints and tie rod ends to see if they move smoothly and don't make any weird noises. Also inspect all the boots on the tie rod ends and ball joints. If the boots aren't torn, you're probably in good shape, since it sounds like a newer vehicle.

Look for wear indicators on your ball joints. And I do slop and visual checks like Jeff mentioned on the rest.

Good luck.
