Checking The Rearend Oil In The Driveway

It appears my pinion seal is leaking. I know I will have to have it fixed. How do you check your diff oil at home. I know I'll have to jack the car up some. My concern is I won't get a accurate measurement because the rearend willbe in the air. It would be much easier if I had a lift. Thanks Pearl02.

well i t will be har to do cause the car wont be leveled but i would just get it fixed........ and is it a bad leak that it leaves puddles on the drive way or minor leak

Jack the car up as level as you can, take the fill plug out of the differential and stick your pinky finger in the hole. If you don't feel fluid level with the bottom of your finger then it is low. Whatever you do, be safe and make sure the car is sturdy on the stands.

No puddles in the driveway. I didn't know about the leak until I was hooking up my speed cal. Pearl02.

I ran the rear of the car halfway up a set of ramps to check my level. I removed the fill plug and fluid started gushing out.....my level was fine I do need to get a rebuild myself - bad pinion or carrier bearing threw off the backlash and the rear end growls like a bear.

One word of advice - don't hit your head on the gas tank like I did! Hurts like hell and I have a little cut on my forehead.

you need to get that done ASAP or you'll be doing more than just a rebuild....

lol since i do all of my gear installs on the floor i have banged my head a couple times in different areas

Here's a update. I was able to check the fluid level today. I lifted the car from the back using the jacking points(not the diff). I lifted the car enough to get underneath there. I left the tires on the ground. As I was pulling the pulg from the diff I noticed it had pressure on it. I slowly allowed for the pressure to bleed off and pulled the plug. I pulled the plug and some fluied ran out. I put the plug back on. I also noticed the the pinion seal area was dry. I believe that my vent tube has a kink or bend in it not allowing the diff to vent prperly. That could be way my pinion started to leak. I'll have to go under there again to check it out. Any thoughts? Pearl02.
