*checks watch* Stupid question time (clutch?tranny?fluid?adjustment?)

ok...i just adjusted my clutch (under the car) and tightened the cable so there's no more slack.....i notice a lot of fluid on the tranny itself....(tranny fluid?) but when i drove on the highway last night.....i'd have it either in 3rd, 4th or 5th and "try" to gun it....but you'd hear the engine rev higher, a sound like barring moving and it took a little while for me to reach that desired speed....is my clutch going? Tranny going? or do i need more tranny fluid?

sounds like your clutch is slipping could be related to the fluid but most likly due to how you adjusted your clutch.

you need some play in the cable...not much but a little to ensure it fully engages. The barring needs a few pounds of pressure to remain in place..mine is making noise (have not adjusted it in 2 years)

oh ok guys...thanks a lot for the response....i'm going to have to go back under the old stang i guess and readjust him....but before i adjusted the clutch cable. Let me begin to tell you the reason WHY i decided to do this....well it would be very hard to get it in gear at times....for example, if i'm parallel parking , and i need to use the reverse and 1st gear quickly, it's so hard to get it into or even out of those gears....that's why i tried to adjust it in the first place.

You probably need a clutch, maybe your oil leak caused premature failure.

Getting warmer. Are you sure the fluid on the tranny wasn't oil? I've seen these symptoms before on several fox's, and it was the rear main seal going, which spits it all over the place, including the clutch which would explain the slipping. Ford actually puts a preload on the clutch, so if you have any successfull experience adjusting this than I doubt it's that you have it too tight. All this isn't to say your clutch isn't going, and even if my hunch is right then it will be soon even if it isn't now. When a rear main leak isn't addressed long enough to get everything wet underneath, it usually means you already have it all over the flywheel, along with the requisite burned patches and wheezing clutch. Find out where that fluid is coming from, and what exactly it is!

great advice. I've seen oil leaks too from the valve covers run all over the trans.

Did you car slip before you adjusted?? back off on the adjustment a little and tell us what happens.

Thanks V8- that reminds me, another big culprit is the lower intake, right in the middle in back it sometimes tends to suck the gasket in.

I never realized how much havoc those intake and valve cover gaskets could wreak on your undercarriage until we did our aod to t5 swap. We pulled the aod out and the entire thing looks like it was pulled out of a vat of oil that had been crusting over for years, yet the aod was in great shape. Gotta love those one piece ford metal valve cover gaskets, I'm never going back, no more leaks.

i agree....this has been quite an education for me....i'll readjust/back off on the adjustment a little and tell the group what came up....thanks again everybody
