Is there any major advantage to getting a chip as opposed to a flash tuner like the xcal 2?

No.

A flash tuner such as the XCal 2 can do anything a chip can do plus read/clear trouble codes and datalog

More or less a chip or tuner is about the same...BUT with a chip you can order different settings for it such as nitrous, blower, street, strip 1, strip 2, etc. With a tuner like the predator you're stuck with the default tune and if you want anything else you have to download them which after the price of the tuner and all the needed hardware comes out to be alot more than having the chip done. If I could do one thing over again it would be to go with a chip rather than a tuner.

It was $75 for a Predator custom tune in my case. With a chip you are stuck with the default tune(s) settings and have to return to the dyno shop to change them. Is that easier or cheaper than downloading them? No. The newest flash tuner out there, the XCal 2, can hold four tunes. Is that enough? Probably.
