Classic Muscle car sound for people 40+

Yep another...

I just put an off road h pipe on my car with stock mufflers. The sound is PERFECT, except not quite as loud as I would like at cruise and idle. Under acceleration, at 80+ mph, it is perfect sound and volume.

So I tried a pair of what are supposed to be GT500 mufflers. They were deeper and quieter. But the throaty sound was gone. I put the stock 60,000 mile mufflers back on. Of course, 60,000 miles might explain why mine were louder then the newish GT500.

So, I am looking to keep the sound I have, but make it a touch louder. Any ideas? I'm kinda wondering about the Flowmaster kit.

Don't do it!!!!!! When you put the Flows on with the O/R H, the car will be super loud both inside and out and will be raspy unless you have resonators welded in after the H. I've had the O/R H with stockers, Flows and MACs. By far the stockers sounded the best, but were quiet. If you can, LTs will quiet the sound down inside the car and still keep it loud outside. I now have personal experience with all of those setups

I have the Magnaflow street axlebacks with off road H. They're still quiet, but louder than stock and have the same sound. The FRPP GTA's are another good choice to retain a similar sound as stock, but louder.

Unfortunately, the 3V tends to get pretty raspy when you take out the cats, I find this more so with LTs. Different people have different solutions, but a lot of people are finding that adding resonators in the typical mid-muffler position tends to help a lot while not reducing volume too much.

When I got my LTs and O/R-H I went with the pypes mid-muffler system, which is WAY too loud and doesn't fit very well. So I just threw the stock mufflers on with the MM kit, now it's pretty close to stock quiet, too quiet for my tastes, but sounds really good (deep low rumble, no raspyness or drone).

I had the Pypes O/R H pipe and Flowmasters and it sounded like garbage. It trumpeted something fierce. I then switched back to the stock mufflers with the Pypes and it was ok for awhile but not quite muscle car enough for me. Im 38 and didn't want anything obnoxious but deep sounding. Here's my set-up. Bassani Catted X pipe and Bassani mufflers. A couple of vids for you ...

Well I hate to admit it, but I would stick with what you have, unless you want to put the time/effort and more dollars into it. When I purchased the car it had Flowmasters just welded-in and they sounded great but had terrible drone. I then changed to the Flowmaster American Thunder Kit, but thought it was too quiet. Then I went with a Pypes O/R H-Pipe and got exactly what everyone else said, raspy, trumpeting, and really loud at WOT. I did some searching and posted some threads and found the way to get rid of the raspiness and trumpeting was to install headers or resonators. I choose/purchased the Pypes M80's and welded them in just after the H-Pipe. This almost completely took care of every problem I had (just a touch of trumpeting but you really have to be listening for it) and finally the sound I was looking for. And it's not just me, I had a guy tell me the other day "That is what a Mustang is suppose to sound like".

How about a sound clip for us. Or you could make a roadtrip to Des Moines so I could hear it in person.

Thanks for all the input! Guess I'll stick with the Off Road H pipe and factory mufflers. I'm content with it, just wish it had a touch more volume. But I think I'd enjoy a CAI/Tuner combo more than say the Magnaflow exhaust. So that will be the route for now, and maybe revisit exhaust later.
My 88 is way too loud, but since it is a sometimes driver now, I like it that way. The 06 needs to remain kid friendly... ex I need to hear them talk to me. They mumble. SPEAK UP!!!

It's not a bad combo to live with especially since it saves quite a bit of money. Had I not had my replacement set of Flows coming, I might have just gotten bigger tips welded on the stockers and lived with that for a while.
