My engine has been surging a little bit so I'm going to try cleaning the IAC valve. Just wanted to know what to use and how to do it. Haynes manual doesn't give any specifics.
Honestly cleaning is pointless. Do a search on here and you will find dozens of threads about this.
Once the IAC starts to go "bad" it is going out of "spec" so to speak. These things have a certain amount of air that they have to register going in. Once they go "bad" or "out of spec" they are useless. Cleaning might give you a month or so of better driving, but it will foul again. Best thing to do is replace it with a new one. They are like 60 bucks at napa or somewhere like that and like 100 from Ford
Thanks. I did do a search and founds lots of threads about replacing the IAC and not too many about cleaning it. So how do you know for sure if it's bad? I can hear my engine surge at idle, but the needle on the tach barely moves.
When the one went bad on my Cobra, the car would die when I depressed the clutch. It wouldn't do it all the time, just when it felt like it. The idle speed itself was fine. I got a new one at NAPA for around $60.
Just take it off and spray electrical contact cleaner inside of it. It dries really quick so I did this 3 or 4 times. It's been working flawlessly since I cleaned it. No need to buy a new one if cleaning fixes it.
