cleaning inside of tranny???

my t-5 is apart and i used some steel wool to clean the sealant surfaces....
i noticed i got some of the wool inside the case. I dont think this would be wise to run in the car??

i was thinking just fill the case with tranny fluid and spin the gears and drain it??

I guess,I know if a engine part or something falls on the ground I got a compressed air powered blaster I fill with mineral spirits and clean the part.Then you blow it off with compressed air.

To be safe you are going to need to disassemble the trans and wash everything out. That steel wool is something you do not want to get into your bearings.

Hey,I saw your thread on the motor cleaning,mineral spirits work great for cleaning inside the engine.You just need to find a blaster and a good can/jug.

True.

Adding fluid could aggrevate a piece and turning it might logged it in a bearing or seal.

Clean first.

Disassemble.

Clean again.

Not if you don't know what you are doing! Don't take it apart if you can't put it back together...

To clean the tranny (on the outside) use some degreaser and then rinse off the case with water.

The inside probably doesn't need to be cleaned unless the previous owner never changed the fluid. You can probably just flush the system clean with some ATF.

the tranny is apart now, the tailshaft, cover and forks and and shifter etc.

I have the case with the gear clusters inside. I took some steel wool to the sealant surfaces, they are really clean but i looked inside and there are some steel wool hairs inside the case itself. I am pretty sure i am not nearly expierenced enough to take the cluster out.

Wouldnt water hurt the gears??

dont use water,i would take it to a tranny shop,have them hot tank the case and re assmble for you.Your openening a can of worm here????Who told you to use steel wool near a opened tranny?Should've used a scrpaper,razor blade or anything that wont leave partincles where they shouldnt be.

well i kind of just did it myself. I was worried about it, i put a rag near my hand to catch some of them, so there isnt very much at all. The surface isnt exactly smooth, so using a razor was harder than hell.

The redneck way would be to try to get as much out as possible then after you drive the car for a few miles make sure you drain the oil and add new oil that should get most of it out then hope for the best mabye even do this a few times.... the correct way to do it would be as iskwezm stated but if your short on money sometimes you have to gamble it all comes down to how much you got in the case your the only one that knows.

wow dude, you really need to stop diving into projects that you really dont know how to do the right way.. you’ve had a lot of posts lately that were basically saying "i think i screwed up, what do i do?".. when people on here keep saying ask first then do, pay attention to it, or you going to end up spending a lot of unnecessary money

The tranny needs to be cleaned with some special parts cleaner that will not hurt the bearings or syncros, that is most important.

Then flush it with clean ATF..

There is a large round magnet in the bottom of the case, make sure you get that clean it will catch everything including metal dust....

i doubt he's gonna get near that magnet with the shafts still in place... the intermittent sits right above the damn thing, and its a bitch to get out with the case totally empty haha

Steel wool wont affect anything. The debris is too fine to affect a bearing. Compressed air that case out, then run some mineral spirits through it.

If you're real worried about it, get some duct tape and a drill and a gallon of mineral spirits. Put the tail section back on so it retains fluid and fill the tranny up with mineral spirits. Then tape the drill chuck nose to nose with the input shaft and spin the tranny for a minutes. This will sling the crap into the side of the case in a zero load environment. Reverse the drill and repeat.

Drain. You're done.
