You could use any good grease remover cleaner and coat them with a good oil or grease to prevent them from rusting. I have sprayed Maxxium motorcycle chain wax on bare metal parts and that has prevented any rust from ever showing up. When it comes time to use those parts, just use a good de-greaser and install.

I just let the shop that did my gears keep them. They tossed them in a pile they already had

You'll never get them in the car the way they were without a lot of effort.

Kerosene cleans off rear end spooge very well. Like SilverGTV8 said it's not any easier to restore them to the way they were than it is to install new gears, and I would not want to go back to stock gears anyway.

Like the great cornholio said! Of course if you just gotta do that, kerosene and even gasoline will do the job of cleaning. Just don't try to light any farts while you're cleaning them. WD 40 after cleaning will keep them coated and lubed for that time if you should decide to use them again. Bwaahaahaahaa!

I used brake cleaner when I installed my FRPP Girdle. Cleaned everything up really well.

I would just use cleaning solvent.
