I have my upper intake off my 87 to work on some stuff and I sprayed the inside of the upper with carb cleaner and it looks fine but I was wondering if I should take the egr off and clean whatever is behind it or if I should be ok with just leaving it on and cleaning it. Thanks and last time I messed up and put something in the wrong forum so if this is not the right place please let me know where it should be.

Since you have it all apart, its a no brainer to clean it.

It's two bolts. I'd take it off and clean it. Might need a new gasket, that's all.

Ok I took it off and cleaned it I have another question is there any reason to take the throttle body off to clean what's behind it or can I clean the upper with it on? Thanks

It's just a matter of a few bolts and some new gaskets... It's one of those while you're in there kind of things. You have it off and apart you might as well give it the gusto in my opinion.

you may want to pull your MAF off and spray really well too, that way your whole airway is freshened.... just unplug it and undo the two bolts holding the bracket to the shock tower.....

you need two of those gaskets, one goes in between the throttle body and the egr spacer, the other in between the spacer and throttle body

Bring the upper to a machine shop and for 20 bucks have them hot tank it. You can take the EGR and spray some TB cleaner in the holes and use an old tooth brush. Same for the TB and IAC valve.
