I have 2 weeks left of my last quarter in college, and an 80% finished 78 Mustang II 2.3 Turbo in the garage.

One major thing I'm missing is a clutch cable. I have 2 clutch cables of different lengths, both from Mustang II's w/ 2.3's, that are too short. I have the RAD4 in there for now while I get around to rebuilding my T5, but the bell housing is the same. I don't know what year my clutch pedel came from and didn't know it mattered until I tried ataching my clutch cable. None of the parts stores around here stock the cable and require me to prepay before ordering. Other than ordering one at a time and seeing if it fits, is there a more systematic way to aproach this?

Also, is the firewall adjuster different between the years? Maybe one of the cables I have will work but my adjuster is too long?? I'm lost here and don't want to play guess and check if I can avoid it.

What dictates the clutch cabel length? My belhousing has the hole in it for the clutch cable so I'm not using that plate that mounts to the block.

I need to get this clutch cable figured out.
Drive shaft shortened.
Mount the battery in a box in the trunk.
Get something for gauges mounted.
Grease the new front end.
Get new front end aligned.
New exhaust.
Tires (have some crappy stock grate looking 14" rims )

Drive it!!

ask for a cable 75-78 v8 model, its the same as the 4 cyl cable
1974 cable is totally different, it will not work. you are probably getting the 1 from a v6 which has the wrong eyelets for the connection to the foot pedal.
there is a color difference for the adjuster, i just cant remember which is which.
can you get a pic of the different cables?

I deleted these photos from Photobucket so I edited this post so no red 'x' would appear.

ok this one i know for sure...the cable your holding is definately from a v6 model no doubt in my mind. the one with the round eye is the cable for 75-78
4cyl -v8 only.. means you have the pedal from a 75-78 car.
if you have an autozone in your area, they can definately get it for you
its where i got mine..i want to say it was made by motor-mite and i
might be able to get you a part # if you really get stuck..

Yeah, and the radiator's just sitting there, not mounted yet either. I was just mocking the radiator up when I took that picture.

I didn't get around to ordering it yet, finals and christmas shopping, etc. I did notice that PartsAmerica.com (CSK) lists a different cable for the V8 and the I4. I'm hoping to order one by the end of this next week, I have to prepay on orders around here so I can't just do it over the phone.

Yea!!! It works, kinda. It fits great execpt the nut that holds the cable to the bellhousing doesn't fit over the washer thing at the very tip of the cable between the spring and ball.

The only way I could get the cable to fit was to move the firewall adjuster all the way to the bottom. I was able to get it on the pedel just fine and very little force to get it on the bellhousing linkage. My pedel's a little higher than I'd like, but I guess there's nothing I can do about that. I'll take a picture of how high the pedel is. The cable isn't extreamly taunt, it's just right.

Now to figure out how to get the nut on.

my pedal sits really high to, as long as you have some play at the top
before it starts to engage your ok.

as far as the washer, ive seen some very sm and some large washers on these cables, you would think the manufacturer would know the nut needs to go over it, but they dont. you may have to grind down an edge to be able to angle it through. you could also take a sharp (new) pair of dykes /cutters and clip off the edge like a fingernail. long handles give more leverage to cut into the washer..
either way im glad the cable atleast attaches to each end... congrats....
