You bought it without even knowing what it will do? lol ......I'll fill you in then. The stock quadrent is a "self adjustable" unit made of plastic.....they tend to break and lose they're adjustability. They bend and flex and that kind of crap as well, not giving you proper engagement/disengagement 100% of the time. With the new quadrant the pedel will feel more precise and will engage more accurately. If you really want full adjustment you should also get a firewall adjuster and adjustable cable. This will allow you to adjust exactly where you want the pedal to engage.
im not sure, but i think Mav meant to say get a firewall adjuster OR adjustable cable.
the stock cables get the fewest complaints, but are not adjustable, so a FWA is necessary.
if you use an adjustable cable, the FWA is unnecessary.
otherwise, Mav is right on. enjoy the new part.
What you need and might have bought is a billet quadrant and HD cable. Now, some adjust at the firewall and some adjust under the car. All have to adjust cause when you loose that flakey plastic quadrant you loose the self adjustability feature too. I have adjusted mine just once in ten years but I am on my original clutch too after 117,000 miles!
Right but when I bought mine there was no such thing as a firewall adjuster. And since I dont adjust too often I dont have any incentive to change over. If I had to do it today I would get the same BBK stuff but with the firewall option!!
Mav, sorry for the misinterpretation. i am in the same boat as 87 GT conv.
on the 88 gt vert, i adjust once in a blue moon. same for the other bikes and cars.
i will go that route when this cable breaks (or snaps the pedal off. LOL). a stock cable and FWA will go in. i think they have reinforced units that spread the force out so it does not tear the firewall off. LOL.
When removeing the stock quadrant and installing the new one, do you really have to drop the steering column? This is what the repair manual says to do.
You Do NOT have to drop the steering column. I dont know who came up with that. I can tell you though I installed a HAYS Adj. Quadrant and Cable on my 87' Stang and I had a hell of a time doing it. It wasn't fun at all, but it was worth it in the end run.
I did this job, and I dont see how dropping the column would make it any easier. My problem was the pawl would not slide off the shaft it was mounted on. Even after I pulled out all the springs and took off the quadrant. I bent the little metal brace that was in my way and had smooth sailing after that. It drove me nuts till I figured out what to do. This job was a nightmare, but I cant see it being hard for me again. Remove the drivers seat and put padding over the seat studs before you start.
Is it safe to just get a quadrant and FWA with the stock cable?
