clutch switch?

Starter is a good possibility. Sucks due to its location though.

The easiest thing to do if you can is get down under the car with a multi-meter and probe the power cable on the starter while someone holds/cycles the key. If you're getting voltage, that starter took a poo. If you dont have voltage, you have a problem elsewhere or the mentioned clutch safety switch may also be the culprit.

With some help try to push start it...I'm thinking if the clutch switch is bad it won't fire up since you have to engage it then disengage after it has fired. The switch is in an open position when the clutch pedal is not depressed is the reason it will fire up if the switch is OK. If it isn't it won't allow the car to run. If it runs then you can get under it and take a look at the wires on the starter. Make sure the ground hasn't worked it's way loose. More than likely you may have a bad stater solenoid.
